So, I originally enrolled in a couple classes for Summer, but I just dropped them because I decided to take the summer off instead....My account balance still shows the U pass fee...will this be automatically reversed eventually? Thanks.
I remember reading an article about getting U-Pass without actually taking a class (dropping the class just before the deadline). Did anyone tried that out before?
Well, I have heard that people have actually enrolled in a class, receive their U-Pass in the mail, and then dropping the class. If everything goes according to plan, you will only have to pay that standard $50 drop penalty fee, but you will end up with a U-Pass. If I understand how the U-Pass works, it is essentially a standard bus ticket made with more durable material (plastic) and the expiry date is set to 5 months after it was first produced. However, there is no individual signature or tracking device within that make each U-Pass unique. Besides, bus drivers most often glances at my U-Pass and rarely have I been asked to put it in the ticket machine...

Works like a charm. I never put my upass in the machine anyways, and they never ask me to. One time I didn't hafta pay the penalty either for some odd reason. Freee Upass! =D
YOU STILL RECEIVE A U PASS, BUT IF YOU DROP YOUR CLASSES BEFORE THE SEMESTER STARTS, THEY SEND YOU A LETTER TELLING YOU THAT THEY HAVE DEACTIVATED YOUR U-PASS.
THE FEE YOU PAID WILL REMAIN ON YOUR ACCOUNT, GOING TOWARDS NEXT SEMESTER.
Still, no big deal. No bus driver ever asks for you to shove the U-pass in the machine. They just look at it.

I am afraid so. Afterall, if you drop your last course, all the student service fees, SFSS fees, recreational fees, and U-Pass fees will be removed from your account, leaving you only that $50 drop penalty fee.
If they do have a way to invalidate your U-Pass, you can always just take the next bus if the bus driver insist that you validate your ticket.
Come to think about it, why didn't I do that last summer...

And sure, they can deactivate it, and they can tell you to destroy it... but busdrivers don't tell you to shove it in the machine anyways. Also, working upasses don't work in the machine if they're bent (i've tried). SO if anything you can bend your upass perpendicular to the black strip a tiny bit, and blame it on the bend... not the inactiveness. (if that makes any sense)
I know some people who have graduated or took extended breaks but kept doing it for the u-pass.
And that is true, you can always just blame technology, I can't remember once in the past three years where I actually had to validate my u-pass, but i remember way back then it not validating even though it was valid
I was wondering if its possible to register for a summer class, pay for U-Pass, drop the class, and end up with a U-Pass for the summer? Or does the registration fee make this not cost effective?
provided that it is an on-campus course (as everyone here has contended) you will get your U-Pass for the summer via mail.. you will not be charged with any registration fee since you are no longer registered if you drop the class.. the only catch is depending on when the U-Pass arrives in mail, you may have to pay for the $50 penalty.. the U-Pass itself costs a lil over $100 per semester so go figure whether it's cost effective... or not

This is when your U-Pass is deemed invalid and they ask you to throw it out.... which you don't really do.
So you don't pay any tuition, and your $100 deposit actually goes towards next semester. No penalty what so ever.

It has to be a class on campus.
If anything...enroll in any class on campus. Drop it once you get the u-pass. Pay the $50 penalty for dropping. 4month u-pass for $50 basically.
