haircut tips

edited January 2008 in General
just wondering, do you tip when you get a haircut and if you do how much? my aunt used to be a hairstylist so she always cut my hair but she moved so now i'm actually going to a salon and wasn't sure what the standard was to tip. thanks.

i round up to the nearest number, eg. if it's 13$ i'll pay 15$ but question is, why do we have to tip barbers when there job is to just cut your hair. now unless they provide great conversation or you're really impressed by their work, you shouldn't tip ?

yah what illicit says, I dont get why we tip barbers...
its like, would you tip your manicurists or w/e they're called?

I go to a student salon so I tip fairly well. They're not making much money on it themselves, and the prices are ridiculously cheap anyway...

i just got my hair DID. and i know the barber so he charges me 15. you girls like flo-ra and company must really get pampered when you get your hair done to pay $25.

i think barbers generally charge less than hair stylists...girls have more hair to cut, which takes more time and precision, which takes more of the stylists time therefore you need to be charged more, ive had 1:30 hour hair cuts

the entire point of tipping is something like this...
hairstylists usually rent 'chairs' in places, they have to pay a rent to work where they work, so after paying their rent and taxes theyre not going to be making a lot of money, tips help their livelihood
and if they dont rent chairs and are all together they have to pay their business license and the rent for the actual building or whatever...
so their time is valuable and precious to them

Wow, 25 dollars haircut? Damn, I know a couple of girls that get their hair cut for $60+. My brother's hair cut cost around $35+ and I get mine cut by my mom.

Also, I wasn't aware that you had to tip barber. I usually tip 20% of what I'm paying.

wow flo-ra, 25 for a hair cut is pretty cheap for a girl... you should recommend my girl there or something :P

I got to a barbershop just got I get my hair shaved and get nice lines done.. it cost 12 and I pay 15 when I have 15, but won't ask for change if I only have a 20... I would tip more than 3, but I go in every 2 weeks to get the lines done so it's not a big deal... They do a great job too, nice lines and they use one of those shaver thingys... not the typical shavers but the knife type shavers... =)

Haha... nah the $25 was only for the cut... she didn't wash and dry or style my hair or anything. But like Mengs said, it was pretty inexpensive for a girl. Anyway, I used to go to a place where I knew the hairstylist, and she did the job at her home... she charged me only $10... but she wasn't very good, so I decided to go to an actual salon.
