As leaders of the opposition parties, we are well aware that, given the Liberal minority government, you could be asked by the Prime Minister to dissolve the 38th Parliament at any time should the House of Commons fail to support some part of the government’s program. We respectfully point out that the opposition parties, who together constitute a majority in the House, have been in close consultation. We believe that, should a request for dissolution arise this should give you cause, as constitutional practice has determined, to consult the opposition leaders and consider all of your options before exercising your constitutional authority. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.
Canada is a Socialist Democracy. NOTE SOCIALIST. NOT Capitalist Democracy, SOCIALIST. JayDub didn't just "start" calling them socialists. THEY ARE SOCIALIST.
And just exactly HOW does this affect what it means on that fateful day when you were born, or AGREED to become, Canadian? It means YOU ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT ANY MAJORITY GOVERNMENT FUCKING YOU IN THE ASSHOLE IN EXCHANGE FOR THE FREEDOMS TO WELFARE AND OVERABUNDANCE OF GOVERNMENT AID.
Harper is an idiot. The coalition is a five-year-old Dion's desperate bid for his favorite toy. Is any of this legal? Sure, in CANADA. Does being legal MAKE IT THE RIGHT THING TO DO? Hell NO. But since when has anybody been completely happy with ANY choices our government makes?
I'm just happy that we have the LUXURY to even sit in front of our computers and sprout our political opinions AS IF THEY MATTER.... while living off our government funded student loans and grants!!!
So whether you've got the hots for liberals, conservatives, NDP, or even the damned Green party, please at least keep in mind that NOBODY GIVES A SHIT. Go cry cry about Harper to some third world country, and maybe somebody there will want your opinion (or your passport).
Accept the coalition is a joke, whether it's supposed to "save" our country or not. A dick move is a dick move. And if you're sooo willing to justify the dick means with the oh-so-happy end, then how is Harper's position any different from Dion's?
Anyway. I don't normally dislike people until they start sprouting off about politics like they know something. Go ahead and have your opinions, but just know that you've never been a prime minister (and dear god, I hope you never will be) before you start critiquing what the leaders of our country should and should not do.
I don't know if having some socialist structures in place makes the whole government necessarily a socialist democracy. On the whole, they're still a lot more capitalist than anything else.
Hmm. It's not just the socialist structures that make it so. Our government system is defined as socialist democractic in our charter (or constitution, I can't remember in which one that I saw it).
:P Like I said. Having SOCIALST there just gives the government more freedom over the people. It allows certain government procedures to be legal in Canada.
Also, just because the Canadian government has more RIGHT to interfere with our national economy, it doesn't mean that they always will. Why would they, if a capitalist economy happens to benefit them, as well? Our government is socialist in structure--but that doesn't mean there are no capitalist Canadians.
Canada is a Socialist Democracy. NOTE SOCIALIST. NOT Capitalist Democracy, SOCIALIST. JayDub didn't just "start" calling them socialists. THEY ARE SOCIALIST.
you totally missed the point

last time I checked canada wasn't a dictatorship as you're suggesting.

keep repeating that it's a dick move, eventually somebody will buy it even though you haven't justified your assertion in any way.

if the states had a system like canadas they would have kicked bush out of office a long time ago im just not down with the fact that harper was Bush's bitch for so long so i dont mind power being taken away from him. plus the conervitive party operates in an almost similar fashion to the republicans in power right now..
and lixie, wernt you kinda quick to say his opinions didnt matter while at the same time telling everyone yours?
Noone else is recognizing the fact harper broke his own election promise / law, by calling an early election, wasting 300 million dollars trying to obtain a majority. He called the election, not the other parties, he called it at a point specifically before Obama got elected to avoid a liberal paradigm shift. Lets talk about dick moves.
Again, this entire act could not happen if harper had gotten the majority he tried to get in an inscrupulous manner.
I'm not sure why lixie is taking part in this debate having not voted either (although it seems she doesn't care who is in power, just how it is gone about, in which case harper made a dick move that cost us all 300 million dollars).
As well...people keep mentioning that who would form a coalition with separatists...well none other than Stephen Harper in 2004, this is documented in a letter he sent to the governer general.
Calling the bloc separatists is hardly the correct term either, they had a change to suceed and did not. Franky, we in BC would be lucky to have a party like the bloc. Look how much federal funds / power quebec gets as a result of their own political party.
we also forgot to recognize the epitome of politics... they're politicians.. of course they'll make use of dick moves because every one of them is one... =)
LUL. Primexx, you're an idiot. My opinion doesn't have anything to do with politics. My opinion is that you're an idiot who thinks he knows all about politics. To quote YOURSELF, you completely missed the point.
And no, I'm not "insinuating" our government is a dictatorship, I said socialist democracy, please read up on your ideologies--instead of spending so much time on posting about your own opinions, why don't you actually read up on our country's constitution? Or, if you're not a big reader, go to a political lawyer and ask him exactly what rights the Canadian Prime Minister has. I'm sure after that you wouldn't be surprised why Dion wants that seat so much.
Again--my only opinion about politics is that they are, or will be, making dick moves, and can you contest that? The answer is no. I never presumed to make any assumptions about politics other than what I actually KNOW to be true (it's all written down in our constitution, after all). All you can do, as JayDub pointed out earlier, is break down my argument sentence by sentence--which is the perfect way to lose the whole point of an entire argument.
So I'll make it clear and concise this time. You're entitled to a political argument--but just don't make yourself sound like you've got years of political experience behind you. Actually speak on what you KNOW, and not what you THINK SHOULD HAPPEN. THIS IS ACTUALLY MY POINT; I DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT HAVE A POLITICAL STAND POINT. (I voted for the Marxist Leninist on election day, for the lulz, if anyone wanted to know).
And P.S. What is the legal thing to do is not always the RIGHT thing to do. Any high school kid who's taken Law class knows better about this universal truth than you do.
... P.P.S. In case anyone is actually wondering why I had to read the constitution and our charter, thank the tedious law classes I ended up taking and the endless research papers on loop holes in our government structure.
And holy crap, really. This thread should be burned. Now I feel like a pompous ass just like Primexx. Rest assured--this is the last you'll all hear from me on this subject.

who's the idiot here? the person who hasn't yet contradicted himself once, or the person who doesn't even know how our government works? mm...hard question.

you said that being a canadian means you must unconditionally accept everything the government tells you, that (aside from being blatantly wrong) is a dictatorship, not a socialist democracy (or a democracy of any kind, for that matter).

I don't need to contest your unsubstantiated assertions, they mean nothing until you back them up.
JayDub never made an argument, the post i broke down was just a collection of unrelated and unsubstantiated assertions...actually that applies to your earlier post which I quoted too. You seem to have a hard time comprehending that sometimes responding to each unrelated segment individually doesn't take it out of context.

You sure that Primexx didn't write that because it sure sounds like it...
It says, and I quote, "Harper is a power hungry twat."
Seems like the only power hungry person in the HOC is Dion who is attempting this power grab for his own personal reasons instead of a legitimate reason.
Seems like the only power hungry person in the HOC is Dion who is attempting this power grab for his own personal reasons instead of a legitimate reason.
have you been following anything thats been happening recently? you're as big a douche as primexx
OMG ANOTHER POAST. I can't contradict myself when I never assumed to know anything about what Harper or Dion should or should not do. I only posted about how the government IS. Which are facts, not just opinion.
And Primexx should really read whole posts. Socialist: accepting government fucking in ass IN EXCHANGE for government aids.
Meaning allowing government intervention, duh.
I'm really tired of repeating the same old things again. But it seems like even if I directly make my point clear, some folks still don't get why they shouldn't be attacking my posts. Or maybe he's still peeved about his opinion not matter a wit, since he knows shit-all about politics and the government?
I take back what I said earlier--Primexx is totally fit for a politician... he seems to have enough talent for misunderstanding and misrepresentation for it.
Still, no one can really win a political argument here. It's like arguing about the Red Sox and the Yankees. It's either you have a boner for the Liberals and the NDP, or you have a boner for the Conservatives. We can all go at it as much as we want, but no one will be really satisfied unless the coalition actually happens OR Harper actually abuses his authority.
And since I'm bored, I don't mind listing a few things said "wrong" here (I started from the first page... so bear with me for this long post, in true Primexx style):
but they're not changing the outcome of the votes! The canadian public voted in favour of anything but conservative but due to our messed up electoral system they got in power anyways. a coalition government would only be correcting the mess and to reflect the actual voting makeup.
Wrong. This "messed up" electoral system is one we've had for decades--explain to me why it's failing you now? OH RIGHT. Because you're pro-liberals!! Discounting our government and how it works just because the result didn't go your way doesn't make you educated--it makes you a sore loser.
well, seeing as how the tories never got majority, anyone who could muster more than half the votes gets to form the government. there's nothing that goes "against" the people's votes, I don't know why you're all saying that, because it's simply not true
Wrong. Pooling your votes together just so you can get the majority votes to win is going against the people's votes. It's legal, but it's not right. Like Siuying said, this move would have been better if it wasn't so soon after the election--now it looks like a direct challenge to the voting result... which was not "messed up" and in this case, not a miscount.
but the conservative party didn't win, or we wouldn't be in this situation right now. They're just the largest minority party, and the only reason they got to form a government is because they got support from enough of the opposition to make majority vote. there's no voter choice for any party to govern
It's called minority government, meaning they won by minority, duh. And there has been no "voter choice" for as long as we've had this voting system. Again, this bothers you now?
how are they "throwing" their votes behind a different entity when each party retains the exact same seats
I'd like to hear you personally guarantee to the Canadian voters who voted for the NDP, or the Marxist Leninist (hello, ME), that once this coalition takes place, there will not be a grab for top seat amongst the coalition parties. Do you have enough credentials for that? Political opposition in all of Canadian history have been dominated by Conservatives and Liberals. What makes you think that the Liberals are going to "share" their right to govern with their teeny coalition parties after they actually get what they want? How silly and optimistic of you. So yes. Voters who DIDN'T vote for Liberals will automatically find their vote to be thrown for Liberals. It may not LOOK that way on paper, but that's how it would/could work.
now since this will be the first real colation (if everything works out), we have to wait and see whether or not its more productive than a minority govt
Refer to response above.
explain how exactly it's not the right thing to do?
This was in response to the coalition being wrong. Just because you're a left wing supporter, it doesn't make everything that they do right. I hope Dion and the Liberals smash out the coalition parties afterwards if they succeed in this coalition at all, just so they can prove for themselves what I had said, that politician are politicians.
And yet, somebody who contradicts themself in the same post is fully qualified to tell others to shut up.
Please point out one ASSUMPTION I made about Canadian politics before this post. PLEASE.
I don't need to contest your unsubstantiated assertions, they mean nothing until you back them up.
OOOOOOOH. So we need to BACK UP our assertions about politicians making bad decisions!!! NOW, WHAT WAS THAT YOU WERE SAYING ABOUT HARPER AND THE CONSERVATIVES?? And can YOU back them up with facts instead of OPINION PIECES WRITTEN BY LEFT WING SUPPORTERS? I wonder who is contradicting themselves.
I wonder what voters will do if the GG calls for another election? backlash against the cons or the libs?

im not 100% on this but i think when they drew up an aggreement they allocated who gets what position within the new cabinet, of course with Dion as PM but that doesnt neccesarily mean ndp supporters get sidelined
Now we have these three parties signing a coalition deal that does not include the main pillars of their platforms.
In other wrds, these parties have ditched the sailent reason anyone voted for them in the first place.
Gosh Golly. Now I call that respecting the people's vote.
... everything we know about the last 48 hours suggests these three parties had a hell of a time deciding who was going to be Prime Minister. How will they ever agree on a budget?
I don't know about you guys, but I'm so looking forward to having a coalition government that will take LONGER THAN USUAL to pass bills and make decisions.
And a coalition formed on the foundation of "getting the majority seats" when the parties can't even really fully make compromises between themselves? This doesn't say "teamwork", it says "eventual dissension in our governing parties and chaos for our government" if the coalition wins out.
Oh, and some good news... our GG is back from vacation! Now she gets to be stuck between a rock and a hard place.
