well my dad is on the high usage plan like 60 a month, and his 3 year contract with telus ended in Jan. Would it be better to just switch providers or negotiate with telus?
I've never really liked Telus. Anytime you want to switch phones they charge you. With Rogers and Fido it's as easy as putting your sim card into a different phone.

Agreed. Rogers/Fido isn't just for "asian hipsters".

I`ve never been charged for switching phones...they`ve always saved my info and put it into another phone for free.

Depends what you do. If you go into a store, odds are the people there won't charge you. At the store level, and even client care over the phone, we have the option to give a goodwill credit for the equipment exchange. When I worked at the store, I never once charged that fee to any of my customers, because I have morals. It's just stupid, and a lot of Telus sales representatives feel the same way. So it's not just black and white like that, you're bound to find somebody that will do it for free, it's not that hard. So any of you who just hear that "OMG TELUS MAKES YOU PAY TO CHANGE YOUR PHONE FROM ONE TO THE OTHER!!1111", don't believe the hype.
Secondly, I never said ONLY asian hipsters buy Rogers, but out of the entire customer base, asian hipsters are but a small subgroup of the overall clientele. I'm just saying, based on the "asian hipster" point of view, yes Telus is behind in the technology, but that doesn't mean there isn't a market for it anymore, and that it's necessarily beneficial to all customers in Canada to switch to a GSM provider, because honestly, a large sum of people who use phones don't even know the difference, nor do they give much of a damn about it.
lol, so i called fido today and the guy that answered my call wouldn't give me nething close to cheap. He just kept reciting the plans they already have and actually told me I would be better off with rogers LOL
well i got bored today and phoned into telus and sucked up to the retentions operator to alter my plan:
now im on a EPP 17.30 plan with 250 anytime minutes unlimited e/w from 6pm unlimited text call id, call wait, call forward
for $27 + SAF + 911 works out to be $38 Its only a $12 savings from my previous plan but it adds up in the long run
side note: she, the operator, sounded down so i cheered her up (wouldnt doubt her for working the graveyard). LOL we ended up having a 30min chat about random stuff until she asked what i "wanted"......hehe
fido unlimited 30 = $30 includes: 100 anytime minutes unlimited evenings/weekends unlimited incoming $10 for 2500 text msgs $6 caller id plus all the other bullcrap totals to about $60
my plan really really really sucks, i wonder if i go into one of the booths or places and be flirty with the guy if i can get something good
i have barely any minutes 120 something?, free late evenings, voice mail 3, caller id, forwarding etc, crappy long distance, unlimited text for 30 + 911 + SAF
that said i only really use my phone for texting, voice mail and the occasional "im here, where are you call", but just checking my voice mail i like run out of minutes occasionally

The sales representatives in stores have no power to give you any plans other than the ones that are already available to all regular clients. What you want to do is call into a Loyalty & Retention department of your carrier.
even if my contract isnt immediately up? or should i go once the last 6 months are approaching, because at this point after 6 years i think id prefer pay as you go, its not because im stingy with the money its just a rip off i think what im paying now
and do i just go about it like " i was wondering how i can cancel my contract, i think i see plans with other companies im more interested in " , are they expecting me to throw an offer at them or do i play coy?
call retentions and ask for the EPP17.30 plan but u need to have air miles or some sort of big compary card (like esso points); worst comes to worst, just say youre in the canadian federation of students (...SFU....).
The plan itself is 200 anytime minutes, even/weekend @ 6pm, voice mail3, call wait for $17.30.
Just explain your situation that you are a university student just looking to alter your plan just a bit just to suit your social needs and financial needs (then bring up something like the EPP17.30 plan) and tell them your current situation with telus that its not doing it. Also dont sound too desperate, at the end of the day they are just human beings too.
The downfall of the plan is that it does not have caller id or text messages. So I dont really know how well you're bargaining skills are but with me I sweet talked with the girl to give me caller ID and 50 bonus minutes for free because I already had then for free on my previous plan. Only thing she couldnt swing for me was the "free unlimited text" so i had to add that seperatly :(.

PS. Im only 1.6 yrs of a 3 yr contract
Are you sure they didn't re-commit you for 3 years? Usually that's one of the requirements they have for offering you a retention plan. You might wanna check on that. Cause they'll usually add it without your consent.
