SFU Engineering Science transfer to UBC Applied Sciences 2nd year

edited May 2013 in General

Is it possible to transfer from SFU to UBC if my schedule at SFU looks like this ?

First Semester
Math 151 - 3
Phys 120 - 3
Chem 121 - 4
Psyc 100 - 3

Second Semester
Phys 121 - 3
Phys 130 - 2
Math 152 - 3
Math 232 - 3
Engl 199 - 3

Third Semester
Math 251 - 3
Math 310 - 3
Stat 270 - 3

I'm really not sure cause I just started to use the BC Transfer Guide as of today. It would be excellent if someone would help me out! Cause civil engineering isn't offered at SFU /: .

Comments

  • why is ur text in an oversized box?
  • I'm not sure LOL
  • Have you started yet?
  • I found this, http://engineering.ubc.ca/eng/students/admissions/university-transfer
but which program are you looking to get into at UBC?
  • I was looking to getting into Civil or Mech, mostly mechanical engineer :P. And I'll be starting SFU next year.
  • The courses required for UBC engineering 1st year are here: http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=12,195,272,33
also found this page, look under "Admission from a Post-Secondary Institution": http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=12,195,272,28#1061
I think you should take PHYS 131 not PHYS 130 because corequisite of 130 is 102, and you're taking PHYS 120 and 121, and I looked under BC transfer guide, if you take PHYS 120, 121 and 131, you get credit for UBC PHYS 101 and 102

And also according to the 1st year curriculum at UBC engineering and the BC transfer guide, it doesn't seem like most of the courses can be transferred into from SFU so I think it may be best to call the faculty and ask about it.

  • ummmm, but i don't see UBC PHYSC 101 as one of the required courses though O:
  • read all the links first
  • I read over the links you have provided, but I'm still not sure on how my schedule should look like, Can you please help me ?

    ok well we know this

"A student will be admitted into second-year engineering if that student had successfully completed or had transfer credits for at least 27 credits of our first-year program. Students not meeting this criterion would be admitted into our first-year program."

    And http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=12,195,272,33

Gives you the list of the courses in UBC 1st year engineering

From the BC transfer guide, we know that

    SFU MATH 151,152, 232 = UBC MATH 100, 101, 152 respectively, thats 9 units

    SFU PHYS 120, 121, 131 (8 units)= UBC PHYS 101, 102 (6 units)

SFU STAT 270 = UBC STAT 2nd (exempt from STAT 251), (3 units)

    SFU ENGL 199 = UBC ENGL 122, (3 units)

SFU CMPT 128 (3 units) = UBC CPSC 1st (3 units), exempt from UBC APSC 160

That's 24 transferrable units into UBC if you're also taking CMPT 128, but you're not, so you're have 21 transferrable units into UBC. That means you're short 6 credits/units to be considered for transfer into UBC engineering 2nd year.

    On this page: http://engineering.ubc.ca/eng/students/admissions/transfer-credits

    They say that

"Many students receive transfer credits when transferring to UBC Engineering from post-secondary institutions. Some of those credits will be transferred as specific UBC equivalent courses. In other cases, UBC will acknowledge the coursework produced in the school where the student is transferring from and grant 1st or 2nd-year level transfer credits that are not necessarily articulated as equivalent to a specific UBC course; they will be “unassigned” 1st or 2nd-year level transfer credits. In all likelihood, these unassigned transfer credits may become articulated as a specific equivalent UBC course, but they will have to be re-assessed. So if the transfer student believes that he/she has covered the content of a specific UBC course in one or more previously completed courses but did not receive exactly equivalent transfer credits, he/she will have to go through the re-assessment of unassigned credits process outlined below.

So for the rest of your courses, I'm not sure if they will be transferable into engineering first year since they are not listed on BC transfer guide except SFU CHEM 121-4 which transfers into UBC CHEM 121-4 (but that's not part of 1st year engineering because you also need UBC CHEM 123-3 to be exempt from UBC CHEM 154-3 and they're aren't any SFU couses listed on BC transfer guide that transfers into UBC CHEM 123-3), so I suggest you contact UBC about the rest of the courses you are taking, so basically I'd say, change PHYS 130 to 131
  • Thank you so much! (: .Ill be sure to call UBC haha.
