Fall 2010 Crim 320 + 380 (Cybercrime)
Hey guys,
So for the upcoming Fall semester, I'm deciding whether to take Crim 320 DE and 380 this fall.. was wondering if anyone of you have taken it or know anything about it.
Crim 320 is with James Kinney; I've heard this class is hard and got mixed opinions on whether in class or DE is easier. (In class lec is offered but all full now.. prof is Garth Davies)
As for Crim 380 (Cybercrime), the prof is Sara Smyth, whom I've never heard of.

sara is knowledgeable (if you get a chance to see her credentials you'll see what i mean) but a boring/borderline horrible lecturer..=.=" she has the tendency to put a lot of content on her ppt slides and flies through them when she's tight on time.. but rest assured.. she does post an edited copy of the slides after and the lecture is recorded.. ;) overall.. relatively easy class to get a good mark in..
hmm.. i took 320 with garth a few years ago and i have to say garth really tries to simplify things for you so it's easier to understand.. sometimes oversimplify.. the textbook (i still have it =.=") isn't much help since it just defines and covers the things he goes over in class.. you're shit outta luck if you want to take a look at how to do the calculations or for more practice questions as all you have are the examples he goes over in class... so make use of the TA's and the tutorials as they are REALLY helpful in filling in the gaps garth didn't.. =) be prepared for a brutal final as mine was 60+ pages long.. and basically the whole class sat for the whole 3 hours of the exam and couldn't finish it.. those who did didn't have time to check over their answers..=\ with that said.. don't stress over this course too much.. most.. if not all crim students know how brutal and horribly boring this class is.. just try to get it over with..=)

She looks angry/grumpy all the time, which she is occasionally. Um, her exams are pretty straight forward, and when she says her exams are very similar to the practice questions, take that into consideration for your studying.
You should hope that you are not in her tutorial because they do get rather dry. Sara tries to start a discussion, but often fails miserably where it becomes her just sitting there asking for our opinions without any facilitation. She does get quite serious, so best not make too many jokes in tutorial. Oh, and she does get very sensitive when she gets to the topic of pedophilia (which is also a major part of her research), so try not to get too off-topic or risque when approaching that part of class.
The group presentations are a breeze if you and your group have done any preparations. On average the marks are very high. The article on internet predators is not as fun to do for a presentation as you'd think. Of course, that's if it is the same article.
The class is not too hard if you keep up with the readings. She does occasionally assign fairly long readings.
Oh, and she dislikes people texting or going on msn while in lecture. Right, siuying?
I'm just trying to decide which one to take since their exams are on the same day but different campuses. Still not sure if I should do Crim 320 by distance. ><"
