LOL so you are basically agreeing with me that you are not in it for fairness, but for you to get a better mark by being selfish and greedy. Oh, by the way, what I said were not assumptions, they were based on the facts that you provided. If you cannot distinguish this, then I doubt that extra 8 hours would really help you write an essay.

i really don't see why everyone is on her case over this.. some people like to accept things as they come and some people like to fight for things.. now whether it's worth fighting for is up for the person to decide.. not you..
she has made a valid point.. the TA is indirectly giving out extensions by not handing down penalties where they are due.. and had she known she could've made use of that extra 8 hours to polish her essay.. it's not the fact that she's coming off as a whiner.. it's the principle of the issue.. due dates are due dates.. they aren't given out ahead of time with the intention of knowing they aren't going to be enforced.. that defeats the whole purpose of due dates.. and in this sense i think she has sufficient reason to demand an explanation..

My two cents: nobody ever deserves a break. It doesn't matter if "some people can write A essays in 8 hours" or "some students got a break." In my book, its irrelevant. Whenever I have an essay or assignment due, I shift the deadline a day earlier for myself so that if anything goes wrong, I'll always have an 'extra' day. Here's what I have learned in most courses: Don't finish the essay the same day as the deadline. Always email a backup to yourself. Never expect the TA to be nice or give you a break. Don't expect things to be fair.

You are absolutely correct! She is being greedy, and like I said, there is nothing wrong with it. We are all selfish, greedy, and want to be ahead of others. The problem is, the OP is not admitting to what she really wants, but claims she wants it to be fair. She does not know if she wants a higher mark, nor does she not know if she wants the people who submitted it late to receive a lower mark.

No need to try to play us like fools, we are all university students and can read between the lines. And posting on a public forum you are bound to get those who will judge and criticize. If you cannot handle other people's opinions and want to ignore it, do so or simply don't post.
hmm... i think you either misread my post or didn't get what i was trying to say.. she doesn't need to know if she wants a higher mark or that the people who submitted it late received a lower mark.. all she needed to know was that the TA is indirectly giving out extensions when he's not supposed to.. there's a difference between being a lenient TA and one who doesn't know how to respect due dates.. it's the conduct of the TA that's being questioned right now and this has nothing to do with other students..
being greedy and being fair aren't mutually exclusive.. you can fulfill your own goals and come off as being fair at the same time.. if you know how to do it and do it well.. politicians is one example..

I see a lot of bullshit in this thread. It's a pretty simple situation.
If anyone of us were in her shoes, we would want 8 more hours. Why would we want 8 more hours? ...to get more marks of course. Every student is greedy in terms of marks, which is acceptable in a competitive environment. Everyone I know would feel screwed over by the TA if they had to hand their paper in a rush like that. So yes, she doesn't need to know anything but the fact that she's been cheated of marks, and she should naturally want more.
Randomuser, to complain is a choice to be made entirely by you. I think you should try your best to gauge the personality of the TA and the Prof, and see what you can do from there. Talking to the TA in a non threatening manner would probably be the best approach. Try not to bring up filing a complaint to him at least after a couple of emails. If there's no hope, tell him you leave me no choice (like in the movies, with malice in your heart). I think you have a much better chance of succeeding with the TA. If you still have the old copy that was off topic it could help your case.
this one time, in cmpt310 i figured out that the late penalties were entirely ignored. at that point my project marks went up from ~60s to ~90s. good times.

So I'm in a class and for the last assignment I had handed mine in on time, contemplating whether or not I should turn it in late, to improve my mark, in consideration that I would lose 10% for handing it in late.
In the end I decided against it, I was tired, and wasn't sure my last minute changes would make that more than a 10% difference.
So the TA ends up saying that for the last two assignments, he forgave people for handing in the assignment 8 hours late (the assignment was due at 4PM but he accepted them up until 12AM).
I'm pissed now because I handed mine in on time, and would have gladly took the extra 8 hours to make revisions.
What do you think I should do, or what is fair? I don't want to complain directly to him because I have one assignment still to be marked. I was thinking of complaining to the instructor, or go higher, what do you think?

i assume you had a few weeks to work on this assignment. you should have complete it on time. the extra hours are unexpected; it will not be taken into consideration. case close. don't be a spoil brat.
Can't resubmit, its an electronic submission that only accepts one submission. It was actually the TA I'm complaining about that, not the professor. I've already got enough credits to graduate so I really don't care how long it takes, I'm just curious in the end what would a fair resolution be?
never ever bitch or whine to your TA's. they will be sticker with your papers.
It'll probably be 3-5% at most assuming you do complain. But you'll have pissed off the TA and essays have subjective marking since there's no 1+1=2 so he'll probably take off 5% for good measure so the net would be the same. Kind of a waste of time and energy especially if this is your last course to graduate. Well, if you just want to be jackass and get the TA in trouble, w/e up to you.
