Co-op: Not registering for 2nd term?

A co-worker suggested that I don't register myself on SFU co-op if my company extends my term. This is such a good idea in so many ways as I won't have to go over all the unnecessary procedures SFU co-op will make me do again during the work term. More importantly, I don't have to pay SFU another fee.

Has anyone tried this? Anyone know of any troubles I might encounter along the way?

    Good plan...except it might not work. I tried to do this myself in the business co-op program, as I did not want to pay co-op fees for the 2nd half of a work term. However, at least in business co-op, the co-op advisor will register you in a practicum automatically if they know you are completing another work term and you don't register yourself. However, if your employer was actually willing to lie to SFU and tell them you are not completing another work term with them, it might work then.

    why bother with Co-op to begin with?

    why not apply to work at those companies and not waste your time and money to go through the SFU process of "co-op". This way you save money and time, but get the same experience.

    Alot of these positions are not posted publicly so co-op kind of gives you that 'in' I suppose.

    I think if it was as easy as you said, then everyone would be doing this.... But is not, the co-op company im working for has not hired anyone new for the past 3 years, but they have been in partnership with BCIT and SFU to bring in a co-op student each semester.

    I agree with edison. Some organizations are looking specifically to hire a co-op student. Both the positions I had were for co-op students only. The positions were only advertised to co-op students and applications from anyone who was not a co-op student would not be considered.

    I've also heard that the government pays some portion of your wage as an official co-op student, so there's much more incentive for them to hire you from the school.
