w/r/t sex on the period: Some guys and gals just don't care. Doing it in the shower takes care of the mess. In addition, I'm told that intercourse is the absolute best cure for cramps bar none. Your mileage may vary.
Also note that depending on flow a dental dam could prevent contact with undesirable fluids. That is after all what they're for.
