If you think golf is a sport then you are the same person who would think that bowling, darts, and billiards are all sports. They may require skill but sports require an athletic portion. There are no athletics required in golf.
Sports and athletics are activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole determinant of the outcome. Golf does not require this.
It may not be a sport (according to your defintion) but it is a game. At they end of they day sports are just games...it's just that different games employ different skills.

So your saying that hockey isn't a sport? Last I checked the outcome is not determined "solely by physical capabilities." If you've ever played you'd know that it requires quick decision making (mental capabilities), teamwork (communication and social capabilities), and even strategic capabilities on the part of the coach. Physical performance is simply one requirement...and this goes for other sports like football and soccer too...and yes even Golf.
If you've ever played you would know that it does have a significant physical component. Muscle stability and control is ultimately what determines a good stroke which is what ultimately determines how much control you have over the ball. A good stroke involves your triceps, lats, quads, and the core muscles such as abs and lower back. So if you think Golfers don't train just as hard as other athletes your severely mistaken.
If golf is a sport, it's definitely on the borderline. Don't get me wrong, I like golf, but it just doesn't belong in the same category as hockey or soccer.

That definition excludes pretty much every sport in existence - even rowing. Most sports require proper technique and a lot of them require teamwork.
"Sports and athletics are activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the most important determinant of the outcome" is better, but you could still argue that physical capabilities aren't the most important thing in team sports like volleyball.

Golf is not a sport, nor should it be a varsity sport.
