Scholarships and Bursuries

edited March 2009 in General
I may be getting ahead of myself here, but I think I'll be getting over a 3.0GPA this semester. (My CGPA will remain below 3.0, however)
Would I qualify for any scholarship? Or does my CGPA have to be over 3.0?

Also, it looks like I'll only be going part-time next semester since I could only get into 2 courses at the moment.... and I think you can't get a scholarship unless you are taking a full courseload, which is 3+ classes.

I'm reading the stuff here:
http://students.sfu.ca/entrancescholarships/regulations.html
But I can find loopholes all over the place...

I always thought Bursuries were for high financial need, as described here:
http://students.sfu.ca/financialaid/bursaries/index.html
So I never applied for them... But I found that people will an "okay" background getting them. I thought I would give it a shot, 'cause my parents have been arguing about money lately and I thought it would make them a bit happier if they didn't have to pay as much for tuition.

But how do i demonstrate financial need? My family isn't exactly living in a box... We just bought a new car 3 months ago straight-up, no loan. We finished paying off our new house's morgage about 2-3 years ago, and we're going on vacation during the semester break (it was cheap though, just down to Las Vegas).
The only thing I can think of is that we have two kids in post-secondary (me and my older brother) and my parents are saving for my younger sister's education.

Theres no reason to not apply for the bursaries, although I stopped cause they kept rejecting me saying my income was too high. They determine financial need, not you, just apply and see what happens.

Those scholarships you are talking about are on an apply as is basis, you have to apply for them all and satisfy their requirements. The only really important one would be the open scholarship, and you need at least 3.5 GPA and CGPA

The open scholarship depends on a semester to semester basis and is the only one you don't have to apply for. Its awesome though they pay like $110/credit so about 60% of your tuition.

I think at one point it was 3.5 but it usually stands at about 3.6-3.7

Last semester it was at 3.67 and the spring semester last year I believe it was something like that too.

It is CGPA but its the best one IMO.

its CGPA and previous semesters GPA...

so if you fuck up one semester in spite of your CGPA you lose out

now that I think of it, its your prior semesters GPA cannot be below 3.5, and your CGPA has to be above 3.5 min, or 3.6 - 3.7 depending on the competition that year and whatever they establish it as.
