Music That Makes You Dumb

edited March 2009 in General
Well obviously correlation doesn't imply causation, but it's still fun to look at the data.
Virgil Griffith used Facebook to gather info on students' favourite music, then graphed it along with their SAT scores. If I remember correctly, he used some number of the most popular artists for each network, then took the average SAT score for that college. I'd go back and check, but the original page is down. Whatever, the whole thing wasn't particularly scientific anyway.

Smarter people tend to listen to music on the right side.
Dumber people tend to listen to music on the left.

I actually found it to be pretty interesting. Most of the bands I like are in the middle and to the right, but artists I hate passionately are all on the left. Clearly, that makes me a smart person.

How about you?

I listen exclusively to Chinese Gangster Polka/Rap, and I don't see it on the list, so I'm assuming it's to the right of Beethoven.

    ^ LOL YES.

Funny how Gospel music is on the left extremity. See, God doesn't help you get good grades therefore he doesn't help you in life.

Beyonce: To the left to the left...

    HEHEHE...

Apparently, according to the legend, Beethoven is indie music.

    1. Why is jazz music so low?

    2. What might the difference between classical music, which is in the high 900s, and Beethoven, which could be classical music, but is in the 1400s, be ?

    3. What's the difference between rap and hip-hop?

    4. What's the difference between rock and classic rock?

    5. Why the is Radiohead so high compared to Led Zeppelin!?

Actually, listening to Morart could increase one's intelligence at least for a short period of time.

Perhaps the effect could be prolonged if one listens to Mozart on a daily basis.

I'm pretty sure those rankings aren't a summary of the entire genre. So, "Classical" is just the people who said they liked "Classical" on facebook - likewise with "Rock", "Classic Rock", etc. Individual artists are measured separately.

He should have done it either with artists/bands or genres, but not both. As I have pointed out above, using both categories makes the findings discrepant.
