upass and etc opt out..

edited January 2009 in General
There are so many more fees excluding the tuition fees... I wonder if you can actually opt out these upass fees, or student services fees by any chance?

Also, anyone took Buec before?
It's my first time taking buec... and I just realized that besides the amount of money i need to pay for the 4 credit course, I also need to pay for $205.60 for the buec course fee... Is this correct? I always thought you need to pay a bit more for each credit for business courses... not an extra course fee..

From what I understand, you can't. I asked about the health coverage (ridiculous) and it's pretty mandatory as far as I've been told.

You can only opt out if you have private insurance comparable or better to it.

And the BC Health Plan doesn't count, and that is just so stupid. I don't need private health care.

You can only opt out of the health thing if you are already covered.

    and for upass see http://students.sfu.ca/upass/eligibility.html
...Shit, I could've applied for a subsidy last semester

I heard you can opt out of the fees for the school newspaper. It's only $4 (per semester?) but it adds up... does anyone know where I can go to opt out of it? And can I opt out indefinitely or do i have to go every semester to opt out?

Go to the SFSS office and you have to tell them summerheaven, then they will ask you why and you have to tell them why.

You can also go to the radio station and ask them for your money back.

It's just going to look embarassing for you when youre taking 15 minutes out of your life asking for a 3.50 cheque, because the student fee is broken down.

Yeah, I know, I will probably end up not doing it. At first I thought, it does add up. But doing it every semester is unappealing to me.

I do admit that I do want my money back from certain services, but like Summerheaven said, it is not worth my trouble. Besides, while I will never use certain services such as the Women Center (due to the fact that I am a male), but I take comfort in knowing that my money is being put to good use (whenever it maybe). The Peak also provide some lulz sometimes, I can almost guarantee you that there will be some Green Peace chewing up Morro's Nuclear Power article next week in The Peak.

Speaking of Opt Out, does anyone know how I can get my UG Rec & Athletic Fee? I can really use that $63.10 in MY Recreational & Athletic Fund.

Same thing as the u-pass, you can't get it back for basically the same reasons.

I think if youre not on campus maybe? Even then I'm not sure you cant get it back actually.

    upass already discussed above

the health plan you can opt out on a yearly basis with proof that you're already covered by an extended health plan (the BC one isn't extended, that's why it doesn't count). it's a little tedious the first time you do it, and you're automatically enrolled in it again the next year. you'll need to opt out for every year you don't want it, but you won't have to re-submit the proof (just uncheck the two boxes).

there's also the student activity fee (or whatever) which the SFSS collects and distributes to the various clubs. you can opt out of the vast majority (if not all) of them, but you have to go to the individual organizations to get it, every single semester. suffice it to say: extremely tedious.

I'm not sure if I can opt out of the health plan or not, my mom says we we have health insurance or something (when we see a doctor we don't pay) but i dont know if it's extended or not.

I get prescription drugs and they sent me this thing in the mail (the SFSS health and dental plan) that says 80% off prescription drugs, but honestly the drugs cost less than $30 every year or so.

Each BUS/BUEC course is about 50ish dollars more per credit...it shows up as an extra fee rather than increasing your tuiton total. $150 more per three credit class and $200 for a 4 credit class...really adds up..
