Confused, Live Downtown OR UniverCity! Help

edited June 2008 in General
Hello,

Im facing a huge dilemma, I dont know if I should rent and Live DOWNtown OR just live up on the hill, please let me know your feedback

Downtown:
pROS:
- Evrything is close, banks, stores, transits etc
- Feels safer, always crowded with people
- More possitive for my living experience as Im an international student

coNS - Freagin' far in distance to sfu hill, so this may be a problem , and If I get a car, the GAS will probibly jamm my monthly allownce
-evrything is close expt classes! excluding ones on the harbour centre

SFU:
Pros
- Classes are close
- save on gas and if I didnt get a car....umm....its just close!
- make more friends from schooL! possibly join more communities etc
- Get a Bigger place!

Cons:
- Possibly depressing!
-Far!
-could be the biggest mistake I've ever done.
- not sure about safety at night and if stores are open late
-I heard SFU was a prison! So im thinking it must be a gloomy place to live, plus the amazingly possitive stuff im reading about the hill here on talksfu makes me not very enthusiastic loool

hmm OK im sure there are more pros and cons to each, but right now this is all I can come up with...

so Help out please, what do you guys think?

- P.S Il either move now, or after this semester..gotta chose quick

    Is renting downtown more expensive?
Bussing from Downtown might take 45 minutes I would say... then again harbour centre is close.

Lot of my friends that live in Rez really enjoy it from what i hear... you could ask JayDub cuz he lives in Rez.

if you live on the mountain, your grades will probably be better since there is pretty much nothing to do, haha

from downtown to sfu is only one bus and ~40mins which is not bad. I vote downtown!

In all honesty, what would you be doing on weekday nights, anyway? Might as well live close to classes and close to your friends. And on weekends, you can make the journey out to wherever you want to go. I mean, if you're considering making that same trek every day to classes, why are you complaining that clubs are far away, haha.

    I say rez.

I think you should just live at SFU.

lol wut, how is it safer at night downtown than @ SFU
Safety in numbers does not apply if they're strangers (see bystander effect)

I would choose downtown, but I don't have experience with either.

    i live downtown

its absolutely wonderful if you are a hip person who likes culture and ease, and accesability...i just take the 135 to SFU or the skytrain it doesnt take long...and it works great for studying before classes if i take the 135

however i have little to no involvement with the school because of that, and i pay rent through the ass, but i would never ewant to live in any suburb area after living dt

i also feel very safe living DT, cause i dont go wandering into the east side

I do live in Rez, rez is sweet but I wouldn't mind living in Univercity either. That would be my choice.

    Pros and cons lists, hooray!

I would choose downtown. It would most likely be more fun for you and you could really experience the city that way. There really isnt much to do at SFU so you would prolly be pretty bored imo.

i've lived in the city for all of my life and i've never gotten tired of it. so my vote is for downtown. plus, you can catch the 135 and it brings you straight up to sfu in about 40 mins so you don't have to worry about transferring busses.

then again, univercity does look pretty and i wouldn't mind living there either, but it's not as lively..

I think you made up your mind already, look at how many cons you have for SFU rez.. lol

Here is something you can get at rez you can't get anywhere else, a true fun and real university experience. Coming to classes for university doesn't count.

Well no one told you to walk around in the forest at night, thats like saying lets play house in the alley by the dumpster

I dont get how ppls consider SFU to be more dangerous than downtown.
  • edited April 2008
noone is saying sfu is more dangerous people assume its more dangerous downtown so in reference to that common thought is where the comparison is drawn

itd be idiotic to wander into the east side with a hand full of money just as itd be idiotic to go for a hike while drunk on burnaby mountain, falling down and dying ;)

the downtown core i feel very safe in, at the same time i dont think im going to be murdered at SFU

actually regarding safeness at SFU i dont feel safe when i get stuck up there and have to hike down the road where cars may hit me, ie: 2 months ago on that fatefull snow day

everyone on rez says rez is great, everyone downtown says downtown is great

obviously rez is cheaper and there are less distractions away from school

obviously dt is more expensive but you get a more urban lifestyle and convenience

i personally would not want my entire life revolving around school, so if you want more of a non school life dont live on res, if you want a life in the real world live dt

school is a very small part of how i identify myself, im a full time worker, and outside of school socialiate foremost, and a student well it doesnt come up often even though im full time student also

It comes down to priorities. If school is important to you, nothing beats living on campus. You can easily just go downtown whenever you want...rip down east hastings it takes less than 30 minutes. Living at univercity makes life a lot easier. You got your own kitchen and your own privacy to focus on your education.

Oh god, downtown. Take the 135 bus, not a big deal at all.

The other 50% of the time, you get mugged AND sodomized. That's why Ryan hangs out around there so often.

yeah but i don't carry cash

Live on campus. When you're in school, downtown is WAAAY too expensive. It's not only the rent... it's the actual cost of living. You'll be going out more often than you previous SWORE you would.

But really, it depends on the lifestyle you think will suit you. If you think living on campus will be a BIG MISTAKE, then I say live downtown. I think every person had his or her own preference (I would think it was a big mistake for me to live downtown until I'm out of school).

I saw a listing for a two bedroom condo on campus 1800 dollars. Two bedroom condo of the some luxury downtown 1800-2000. I don't think the cost of living is all that more downtown. I've noticed at some grocery stores like the super valu on davie, a box of effing cereal is 9.99-- just walk down the street to safeway or IGA and they have regular suburb type prices.

I would never want to live on campus ever, its not compatible with my life. It would be overly aggravating for my boyfriend to stay the night and have to leave for work the next morning. I also couldn't stay at his place without having to get up super early to go to school.

Living on campus just seems like a pain in the ass, but Im spoiled and used to luxury.
