Writing a Wedding Toast...help!

edited April 2008 in General
I need help writing a toast for my sister's wedding reception!! I have no idea how to write one...I've never even been to a wedding before...

the reception is in a couple of months, but still I need a head start on this...
how long should a toast be?

Any do's and don'ts? Have any of you done a toast before? How did it turn out??

Ummm. I've been to several weddings but I don't remember any of the toasts =S Most of them were in Chinese, and the others were probably not very good...

Have you watched Wedding Crashers? lol it's a pretty good movie. Anyway there is a part in there where the sister of the bride had to make a toast... if you haven't watched it Owen Wilson gives some pretty good tips. Basically, don't try to be funny if you're not and just be sincere. I'm sure you are genuinely happy for your sister and have something to say about that.

My parents are forcing me to go to my cousin's wedding in Toronto this June. If I have the authority to give a wedding toast, I plan to fake drunkenness, be a pric* and flame her for the following matters...

    1.) Her unstable body weight
2.) The fact that her mom (my aunt) is divorced
3.) Me being forced to attend her wedding
4.) The horror that I could be next
5.) A plead to not make me an uncle

Look, her mom (my aunt) will probably get dirt drunk anyway. What I want to do is no better. Here is something I just thought of...

Hi, I am (my name), I am (Name of my Cousin)'s cousin. First, to the groom (Name of my Cousin's Fiancé), welcome to the family! By purposing to my cousin, you have just fulfilled one of our family's tradition: Interrupting our lives because of your wedding. You have no idea how badly I want to get the next plane and get back to Richmond.

To (Name of my Cousin), I congratulate you for finding love. Your ability to get married is a total surprise to me because of your divorced parents and your unstable body weight. Your marriage pretty much destoryed my theory that children of divorced couples will have a harder time finding love. I hope that your marriage will work out better than your mom's.

After you, the next wedding will probably be either my cousin (my next eldest cousin's name) or, god forbid, mine. Oh yeah, I don't want to become an uncle until after I finish my BA, so...

    Thankyou.

My whole family will excommunicate me if they read this, so don't spread this around please.

Yeah, however there is always the stress from the formality involved. I mean, my parents are preparing to drag me to Toronto even if they have to strap me to a Hannibal Lecter style stretcher because I told them repeatedly that I don't want to go. Can you imagine what sort of shi* I will get into if I actually read that in my cousin's wedding?

Well, I have never gone to a wedding of an relative my mother's side anyway because all of them got married before I was even born. My mom is the little sister of the bunch. Therefore, it could be possible that their relatives all got married before they were born.

wow its gunna be weird if the first wedding u go to is your own..lol
but ya us brown ppl have huge families so there like a couple of weddings every year lol. When I say family i mean every relative (distant or close) cuz brown ppl usually have tight-knit relations. just custom i guess

    lol you guys are hilarious.

anyway, yeah i'm pretty sure we're gonna have a blast-i'm really happy for my sister :). after the wedding, we're flying to vegas to celebrate hehehe...but i'm just having the jitters about making a toast. it's sure to come off corny, but i think it's better if I keep it short and sweet.

the only thing i remember from Wedding Crashers is the montage of them crashing weddings, and random topless women falling back on some beds. lol hahah

wow, Student0667 I hope you don't make that toast...that would just...be so awkward lol. i'm assuming you have had a history of rifts with your cousin? or is all this resentment coming from your aunt's marital issues? or is it just because you don't wanna go? come to think of it, i actually have a few cousins in which i would give a similar speech as yours...but good thing it's not likely i'd go to them in the first place...

It isn't rift, it is just that this cousin and I are not particulary close because she is a lot older than me and we rarely talk even in family gatherings. Also, my aunt's marital problem played no part because marital problem runs through my family. For example, exactly 50% of my aunts and uncle on dad's side are divoced. It is just that I seriously don't want to go and don't see the point in going.

The only wedding I have been to was my brother's and I got to be a bridesmaid ;o) That was almost 10 years ago...

I remember their good friends giving a toast and telling some random crazy embarrassing stories complete with facial expressions and hand gestures. I remember I was too young to understand some parts of the stories but if I was older I would have been laughing really hard. I also remember a relative giving a really long drawn out speech and how I was getting antsy sitting in my seat... so keeping it short and sweet is really good.

My best advice is already given earlier in this thread... listen to Owen Wilson's tips from the Wedding Crashers. If you have some kind of appropriate story about your cousin (either sweet, funny or both) that's not too complicated to tell, then consider adding it into your toast.

I agree with lazyGUY, weddings should be a blast! I want to get married in Las Vegas, baby! I would party it up in Vegas with my man and close friends. I probably would want my close relatives there too for the ceremony. Besides, it would be quite inexpensive compared to a traditional wedding. That money is better spent on a down payment on a house/condo.

For guys, the wedding toast is essentially just a roast, except that at the end you go, "but seriously, though, they're a great couple, they'll be very happy together, try the shrimp."

Girls have it harder, cause they're expected to get all emotional and deep, and probably shed a tear or two.

I love weddings... an excuse to get a new dress and look pretty. Plus free food! =D But I've never been to a wedding where I knew the bride/groom very well (except for my aunt's wedding about 10 years ago where I was a flower girl... don't remember much from that)... I would imagine that it would be even more fun if I did know them.

flo-ra is right. The free good food is definitely worth going to weddings for. And all the girls would be dressed up beautifully too.

I guess another reason why I don't want to go to any wedding is because what happened in my other cousin's wedding...

As some of you may know, there was recently a new trend where the bride would throw their garter into the crowd and the man who caught it would get married next. Instead, in my cousin's wedding, she decided to pass the garter around "musical chair style." Guess who ended up getting the garter?
