How does failed course count towards GPA of that semester?

I'm taking 12 credits this semester and did horribly on one 3-credit course. How does it affect my GPA? Like, is failed course excluded from counting GPA this semester(so that the calculation becomes score/9 instead of score/12) or does it still count? and if it still counts, how much of it? Zero?

It counts as a GPA of zero. So you take the marks from your other three classes and divide by 12 instead of 9.
