KIN courses

edited November 2013 in General
Hey,

What are people's thoughts on KIN 140? Possibly through distance ed. I don't really have any science background, just taking it as an elective. I've taken KIN 110 online, and did alright in it. What is the class like? Assignments and exams? Thanks!

  • It sucks there's so much material. The course jumps from topics all the time, and the grading was so specific. They'd ask for the smallest details from the textbook. Only like 2 people in my class got A- and that was the highest grade. I'd recommend taking it not-distance ed. I hear KIN 140 on campus is actually decent.

We can trade info then! I'm taking 140 online with Stephen Brown and planning to take 110 online next term.

Quizzes 15% - online, one per week, 5 questions multiple choice
    Assignment 1 10% - 1 page sort of make a questionairre thing
Assignment 2 10% - 2 pages, make a summary of a disease assigned to you
Assignment 3 15% - 2 pages, make some sort of a health plan
Midterm 20% - about half multiple choice, half short answers
    Final 30%

Workload is pretty light (in my opinion at least). One short quiz per week, assignments are short and straightforward, midterm was ok. Quiz average around 70-75%, assignments (2 of them) around 80%, midterm 75%

    What is 110 like?
  • I took 110 online last spring.

Diet Analysis Project (basically 10 assignments) - 20%
Weekly Quizzes (4 multiple choice questions) - 10%
2 Midterms (half multiple choice, half fill in the blank/short answer) - 40%
Final Exam (10% of material from first 2 midterms and 20% new stuff) - 30%

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks guys! Yeah, I took 110 online this summer, and it was like dwill said. There did seem to be a lot of small details from the textbook that we had to memorize for the midterms and exams, but that may just be because I'm not that good with memorizing names and numbers !
The assignments ( diet analysis project) were also pretty straight forward, basically as long as you did one, the next one was simple enough, and I think most people did pretty well on them.

The classes seem pretty similar! Was 140 interesting? I'm taking it as an elective, but also a slight GPA booster. Just a little worried about the midterm and exam!
  • I'm finding it quite interesting although as iStudent said, the topics are of all over the place. For example, in one chapter you'll talk about cancer, the next you'll talk about exercise, then fertility management and so on. The textbook is from the course author himself -- Stephen Brown so you will not need to purchase one. It's easy to understand although some parts seem suspect and inconsistent. I think it will work as a GPA booster but you will have to do a fair bit of memorization for the exams in order to do really well. Do you know roughly what the average was for your class?
  • I remember right before our final exam, our prof walked in and told us to write down what we liked in kin 140. He said he would make it more concentrated for future terms and not as broad, since everyone was doing poorly. So, I'm guessing it's better now (assuming he did what he said he was going to do)
  • I've seen people in Kin 143 working at the gym. How is that course?
  • Disregard everything, and just take all KIN courses with Diana Bedoya. Boom A+ done.
  • No, I took it Fall 2012
  • Seems that I got lucky and they've changed parts of the course this term
