Would you guys ever get your phD

edited November 2013 in General
If money wasn't a problem, would you actually be interested in getting your phD? What about if money was a factor?
No long breaks inbetween each degree

Probably, cuz people who major in psy, they have to get a phd to find a better job T-T
  • I think you should only go for a graduate degree if you know for sure that it will benefit you in the working world more than its gonna cost you
  • No I am working after graduation. Might do a masters one day, but I don't see myself ever going for a phd.
  • @MXC It's not always about that though. Some people get their PhD because they really have a burning passion to research and discover new things and develop new theories etc. and shit like that like all the original PhD people we now have to study in our textbooks.
  • If money wasn't a problem, I'd think of it
  • Isn't PhD sort of free? You would have to work for your supervisor and TAing but you will get paid.
  • Don't you have to get someone to fund your phd research? That's what I thought it was, hence why it's super hard for people in history and the humanities like myself to get phd's without going broke. No one is willing to give us funding as everyone's crazy over science right now
  • ^^That's what scholarships and grants are for...you apply your research to your faculty and they get the funding distributed to you.
  • If people are getting a PhD in the hopes of becoming a professor, chances are much slimmer than they used to be.  The attrition rate can be high, over 50% in some programs, and nothing is sadder than an ABD (all but dissertation).
  • Yes especially with the tenure of all the old folks. Lecturer is different from professor.
  • Yea, it's really hard to become a professor nowadays.
  • Yeah you need to sleep with at least one student preferably twice. Usually easy the first time but second time around gets harder (no pun intended) because you need references.
  • " Lecturer is different from professor. "  Definitely! Lecturer = 2x classes and 1/2 pay of professor, plus no job security.
  • ^^Hahahah even universities are trying to maximize profits...how's that education business going, eh?
