How is the SIAT student population?

swj
edited November 2013 in General
Just wondering what the SIAT student population is like. What's the
proportion of local vs international students? Are there many girls or
is it more like engineering and computer science that are guy-dominated?
And semi-related to the previous question, how are the students like?
Super nerdy or just 'normal'?

  • What the fuck is 'normal'.
  • wat does thees have to du with anything?
  • full of hot asian girls that cant speak english

Non, je ne parle pas le anglais
  • Learing languages is time-consuming and it needs lots of efforts,so be tolerant and try to put yourself into others' shoes. BTW, full of hot canadian guys that can't do maths. :)
  • Umm theres no big difference of guys and girls, a good ratio i guess. LOTS of asians, LOTS are ESL or don't speak fluent english...which kinda sucks if you get stuck with them for group projects. Everyones normal, its a smaller community than other programs, I basically see the exact same people in every course I take.
  • I saw lots of chinese in eco chem or math, but few in psy and fren
  • I never said it's a bad thing or that I'm not tolerant of them, I just pointed it out
  • If they Can't speak English, how did they become sfu students? How did they pass the courses?

You tell me, I wonder that everyday
  • @Psycho I guess you can't speak French also because it's "l'anglais" not "le anglais".
  • And that's the thing. Barely any of these minimally English speaking international students and FOBs pass their courses or barely pass the ones that require good knowledge of how to speak English especially ones with written assignments. They became SFU students with $$$$$$$ and passing the LPI/TOEFL.

Back to the OP original question though lol SIAT is a much smaller community for sure which can be good or bad depending on what you like. The same students usually hang out in the SIAT place with their computers and make friendships pretty fast because of that.

....well, I always making that kind of mistakes, and thanks for telling me.
Back to FOB girl question, if they pass the course, and maybe get higher marks in essays than native speakers( like me,lol), then it means they Can speak English at least. Speaking English like native speaker and Can speak English are different
  • Btw, if u like hot fob girls, why don't give ur hand to help their English so u can get closer....Lol.
  • That's because SIAT is not writing intensive, let's face it if you've got some knowledge of math/calculus with a design and creative mind you can take on most of the courses. In addition, SFU also has its own private international college called "Fraser International College" (take the path outside TASC 1 across the road and down the trail into Discovery Park).  International students usually take limited first/second year courses while they work on their English language skills (written, spoken, grammar, etc.)  Harbour Centre also offers ESL classes as well.  Looks like our "profit" driven university is really eager to get on-board the gravy train.
  • I know FIC, but if those students Aren't SFU students. So I don't give them a fig whether they can speak English or not. Another thing is we have WQB courses, and We have to pass them at least, right? BTW, @ beanbean. Believe it or not, today I made couple mistakes like de anglais, le anglais, and that happens after u pointed my mistakes! ( struggling in French )

@beanbean isn't l'anglais just short for le anglais?
  • French people like to put le + words begin with a vowel / h change into l'xxx. Same as Spanish, and I hate it
  • @ezc No, it's not an abbreviation but the actual proper grammar. Basically what psyho said.
  • Le anglais is like saying a apple instead of an apple.
  • Bravo (*^o^*) [though le la are defined articles like the in English]
  • @Psycho Lol I never said I like them, again, I just pointed them out
  • Well, usually people say HOT girls then it means that they like those girls. (For me at least, ˊ_>ˋ)
  • There are a lot of FOBs that pay people to write essays/do assignments. That includes doing IAT assignments. There's a Chinese website where people hire people to do assignments.
  • I don't doubt it. Especially with how much extra money they are willing to fork over for "tutoring" and stuff. Like tuition is expensive enough. Buying your degree is kinda pointless.
  • That's true. But anyways, if they are admitted into sfu( not esl or fic), their English is "mas or menos" cuz they have to understand the exam questions and writing short answers in the exam( Maybe some presentations). Plus, the international students I know about, including me, we don't ask tutors for help, honestly. Instead, I go to student learning commons. :)
  • And that's great :)
  • LOL beanbean
