New Student: Registering for courses

I'm a first year at SFU this fall and I don't really understand how courses work.

When I search a course, for example BISC 101, it says it has 3 days for lectures and 2 for labs. The course description says it has 4 units but wouldn't that be 5? Are tutorials mandatory?

By units, do you mean credits?

Credits usually correspond to hours of instruction.  But when it comes to labs, they only usually get 1 extra credit.

So a first year chem class may have 3 hours of instruction per week (3 credits) and a 4 hours lab every second week (1 credit).  In total, the class is 4 credits.

I don't know of any class that is 5 credits.

assuming you're talking about D100, the wed 8:30-11:30 is not a lecture, thats your final exam date.

lectures are tuesdays and thursdays, labs are also on tuesdays and thursdays and yes they are mandatory.

units are credits, this course is worth 4,
