CMPT 225 with Anne Lavergne?

I've read many, many awful reviews about Anne Lavergne. I don't care much for her teaching, as I don't attend most classes anyway, but I was wondering if it's true that she doesn't give partial marks for code that doesn't run and whether it's true that her exams aren't reflective of her assignments?

Yes if the code doesn't run then you won't get marks. I remember more than half the class failed the second assignment just because the code wouldn't run in the specified format they were looking for. The assignments were a pain and she doesn't do any coding in class. She just teaches the concepts and maybe offer some example code but pretty much you are on your own. The midterm and final was easy though. Just be careful not to take this course with any other heavy load courses. I took it in the summer with only cmpt 225, and 150 so I was fine. The exams are more related to the stuff she teaches, much less the assignments themselves but its pretty straight forward.

Ah, I see; that's what I was afraid of. Thanks so much for your response, it definitely cleared up a lot for me. So you don't need to write code in her exams? I'm taking it this summer with Math 152, Stats 270, and Bus 207. 

My options are either taking it with her and being able to attend all my lectures (if I so choose) with no time conflicts, or taking it in Surrey with the good professor (Edgar), but not being able to attend a single class as his lecture starts at 10:30 while Stats ends at 10:20 for me in Burnaby. I guess I'll just have to suck it up! Thanks for your help. (:

As far as I remember, you didn't have to write any code. It's like the midterm except less match the words, or fill in the blanks. If you understand what she teaches you in lecture then you should be fine. I wouldn't advise you to take it with math 152 AND stats 270. Boy do those courses make you work. 

Stats 270 was really difficult for me (i had tim swartz) and his textbook was so garbage that i really didn't have much to study from and the questions don't have answers. Ended up with a C+ :(

Math 152 wasn't too bad. If you do the homework on a routine basis then you're good but still require lots of study and work if you don't understand.

It's certainly possible to do all of those 4 courses, but don't expect alot of free time. Who are your profs anyways?

Oh wow, those exams sound like a joke, haha. Hopefully she keeps up that exam style--I did e-mail her regarding the class about a month ago, but she never answered. Unfortunately, it seems that professors are limited next semester, so I have a couple of unknown profs and one with mixed reviews. Fortunately I do NOT have Tim Swarts--I've heard that anyone would be better than him, haha. 

But I have Anne Lavergne for Cmpt 225, Allan Matadeen for Bus 207, Jonas Jankauskas for Math 152, and Ari Belenkiy for Stats 270. I'm prepared for a pretty harsh semester, but honestly when I take three courses I just end up being so lazy because I have too much free time (taking cmpt 125, macm 101, and math 150 this term). Hopefully having no free time will kick me into panic-studying mode.

Hmm I haven't heard of those profs before. But yeah, I can see how you can get lazy if you don't have things to keep you busy. That's me... all the time in the summer when I'm taking 2 courses. 

I think you should be alright if you work hard. 

Anne has a strict email policy where you have to include the course number, student number, subject, Dear Anne or whatever, and all that crap. Anyways, as long as you don't have swartz for 270 it should be a lot easier.

One of them's a guest lecturer, one's a phd student, and the other's name is actually Seeparsad but he goes by Allan. Not a whole lot I can do if I don't want to take a summer off, haha. Oh, I see, she sounds like a real peach. I don't know if I'll be able to get over her saying "how's that?" every two seconds, though. Thanks again for all of your advice; I've been researching like a mad(wo)man! Good luck, too. (If you take courses; if not, then have a lovely summer!)

Haha Thanks. But I was lucky enough to land an 8 month co-op job :)
Had my last exam today and it feels weird to know that I won't have another final until 1 year from now.

It's all the way in Richmond unfortunately. Company is called ZE PowerGroup. 
I actually didn't have a hard time finding a job. I think i sent in a total of ~40 applications, 2 interviews, 1 job offer.
As long as you just keep looking everyday it shouldn't be that hard.
