Should I go to SFU for CRIM??!! Help :)

edited March 2013 in General
So, I have been accepted into SFU for Criminology for 3rd year and I am not sure if I want to go there or not. Can anyone give some advice, their experience, what it is like, or anything else that could help me decide to go? All of the different classes are pretty neat and a much better selection than VIU for 3rd and 4th year. Thanks all! :)

  • Why not apply to UBC? I've heard SFU crim isn't that good because classes quickly fill up.

  • ^UBC doesn't have a CRIM department
  • I am pretty sure that scheduling is a big issue that tansferred students have. I experienced that too when I first transferred to SFU and this would probably keep going....because students with more credits usually have an eariler registration date. The school wants to make sure 4th year students can graduate. And if you have relative the same credits, your gpa determines your registration date. Transferred students usually have 0 GPA the first year...so they have very late registration date. I heard that Crim is very competitive. Any particular reason for you to choose crim??? it is better to really think about what you really want to do when you graduate before you actually come to SFU.  It 's really not an easy job to graduate from SFU, especially you want to rush to graduate.....damn
  • Yeah pretty much what the others said. SFU is notorious for its enrollment system screwing their students over and I keep hearing from my crim friends that crim upper level division classes fill up so damn fast, you would be lucky to even get on the waiting list

Even though they say crim is one if the best at SFU, the cons outweigh the pros honestly. The uni itself has no campus life because it is pretty much another commute school....everyone rushes home after class. The TAs who mark ur essays can be a hit or a miss, usually a miss imo. Depressing building. Sfu grading can be a bitch. My friend who transferred to sfu from Douglas for crim had so many problems with graduating, she had to spend a few more semesters here becuz advisors told her the wrong things..I mean i know all experiences r subjective but I just wanted to give u my two cents haha.
  • immadiamond - thanks for you're two cents! I'm not too concerned about registration but I guess I should be? IDK. I'm more interested in what the profs, TA's and classes are like. I want a solid education.

lakerfanatic - thanks for commenting. Are you talking about Crim profs and TA's specifically?

talksfuacct - I will have my diploma in Criminology this april so I have over 60 credits going ingot my third year, have a 3.8 GPA and I want to continue with my degree...it is my field of interest so that is why I chose Crim!
