SFU Acceptance

edited November 2012 in General
Trying to get an idea of how high my average has to be for acceptance into Comp Sci. Also, is it possible to get into SFU Surrey and not Burnaby? Or vice versa? Just want to get an idea of how admissions work. I'm a grade 12 student right now at a canadian high school.

I had some pretty mediocre grade 12 marks, but as I recall the average was only calculated on the highest 4 or 5 grades in approved courses (And when I applied my info tech 12 course counted, which inflated my average a lot)

That probably doesn't really help much, but I don't think the required average is terribly high.

If your math 12 or english 12 marks aren't very good (75% I think) you may have to take proficiency tests when you are admitted (and if you fail said tests you may have to enroll in a course to learn that stuff )

Most programs offer courses at all campuses (well, at least CS does.) If you're admitted into CS, you're not tied to a particular campus, and you can sign up for courses where ever.

There is also the SFU-surrey-specific Software Systems program that might be worth looking into as well if you haven't already. From what my friends have told me (it wasn't offered when I signed up) it sounds pretty nifty.
  • There's no such thing as admission to SFU Surrey and SFU Burnaby, you get admitted into SFU period. Where you pick your classes determine which campus you go. As for grades it's better if you talk to an adviser on campus
  • If you plan on going to surrey though I would recommend software systems, in which case you could take a look at the systems one first year cohort.

  • Last year when an SFU rep visited my high school I asked her why I wasnt accepted into SFU yet ...

At the time i had an 84.5% average (i remember cause this pissed me off so much) and i applied to the arts fac. My friends had like 85% and above...

At the time the admission average for arts was 85% ....

Anyways, i told the rep my average was 84.6 and she was like thats still too low... I was like so youve admitted people with 85% on the dot? And she said yes

The fact that I was .4% away from 85% and they still wouldnt admit me bugged me =.=

In the end i got an acceptance letter in like.... Mid march i think
    ...
The rep came in like jan
  • My average was 88% and I got into software systems at sfu. My average was based on Math 12, English 12, Physics 12 and Chemistry 12.
