Two aussie girls coming to SFU....

edited May 2012 in General

Hey all!

Me and my best friend are moving to Canada soon to start the fall semester at SFU.
We are trying to figure out the best place to live...We want to party lots, have fun an meet lots of new people. Should we live in Burnaby or go closer to Central Vancouver? And if we go closer to the good party areas, how long will it take to get to SFU?

Thanks :)

  • Hey aussie girls.
If you want to "party lots, have fun, an meet lots of new people." then you want to live in downtown vancouver like yaletown, granville, or west end. These places are great for that; however, they are also quite expensive and small places. The bus ride or skytrain ride will be round 30-40 minutes to SFU, which is not that bad.

  • I'd recommend living on residence for the first year, that way you will meet a lot of other students and there is always something fun going on up there. Downtown is just a bus ride away, so it's not like you will miss out on anything. It will also be a lot more cost effective to live on residence
  • in for the pics
  • Thanks guys, were beginning to think somewhere half way between Burnaby and Granville, any suggestions? Close to Skytrain would be nice!

We're leaving Australia in 4 weeks, so excited to get there! :) Thanks for the help

  • Maybe around commercial might be your scene? Its more of a bar/cool food area more than nightclubs, but I like that area better than straight up downtown. I'd say live downtown, live in rez (which has its downside because you have to get a mealplan if you're staying in some buildings), or around the hastings area near sfu. lots of house parties down the mountain.
  • sorry, I forgot you're not from around these here parts...by commercial I mean commercial drive, google that shit
  • So where are the two aussie girls now?
  • probably getting gangbanged lol
  • Granville island has a nice mix beetewn cars and people, as with the best shared spaces, but spontaneous? Unplanned? Oh no that place has had the bejeezus planned out of it right from the moment that CMHC cleared out most of the industry and developed a meticulously designed festival marketplace with a carefully curated mix of tenants; even the buskers are managed by the CMHC.Does it work? Is it successful? Is it a pleasant place? My take is that sure, it's pretty cool; it'd be nice if Vancouver had a real' market (like Jean-Talon in Montre9al), but Granville Island is pretty nice. But it sure as heck didn't emerge spontaneously, it took a lot of effort and careful planning. Who knows, maybe it'd've been even more interesting had it been truly unplanned
  • wow your rent for downtown is going to be hiiiiiiigh. you can get anywhere 'party worthy' from either burnaby or van really.
  • Spanish Banks on a hot day when the tide is out is totally awseome! I haven't done that in way too long. Nowadays it (kid activity) is all about mountain biking and building stuff (and of course skiing in Winter). That's one thing that Vancouver has over North Vancouver; our beaches mostly suck. Though at least I do have two of them within walking distance.
