Is anyone else pissed off at the limited course offerings for the summer semester?

edited March 2012 in General
I cannot believe it! I have talked to many students - many of which are CRIM students and SFU has offered very little upper division courses. So many people are complaining. I have heard that this is one thing that UBC is better for, is class offerings. This is a joke. I got into my classes and what I need, but it is honestly ridiculous when I look at what SFU has to offer for Upper division CRIM classes in the summer. No one after my registration date was able to get anything, and my registration date was NOT late. SFU needs to do something about this. Ever since 2009, the school has been cutting down on class offerings. The word will get around and student will go elsewhere.

  • what are you talking about? ubc barely offers any courses in the summer
  • Hell year....im so pissed too..and here is the reply i got from Phillip jong

I understand your disappointment but at
this time we are not looking to expand on our course offerings.
Attrition will generally occur on these courses and with some
perseverance and a little luck you should be able to find a course.

    Cheers,
  • Wow! Even the CRIM advisors do not care! Also, UBC offers more courses and course selection in general. I know this because I have a friend that teaches there.

What ever happened to SFU having such a great school of criminology? If they cannot even offer a sufficient amount of courses for students wanting to get into a course to be able to take one.
  • "Also, UBC offers more courses and course selection in general."

    In general? Yes
    During the summer? No
  • Whatever it is, it is about fund allocation, seriously the crim department's decision to to just allocate a few hundred seats for both Burnaby and Surrey students is just a horrible miscalculation. Unfortunately, we are all currently living in an age of austerity...so I can't really do anything except complaint...
  • Try the Sociology and Anthropology department! I can't even get into 3 classes. I've only been able to get into 2 classes, neither upper level classes which are what I need if I want to graduate one of these days!
I'm on the wait list for others but who knows....
    It's stupid crazy.
  • Plus, they keep making a lot of the upper division classes on the same day and time and/or at a different campus so if one is open you can't actually take it with another upper division class!
    *RANTRANTRANT* :(
  • well at least your not alone...its really not fair at all...would more money solve this problem?
  • I think they need more CRIM profs to teach upper level courses and offer more distance ed. Distance ed courses should be able to take in more students then on campus...i would think so.
  • u would think so but no...haha..
  • this is probably the reason why undergrads takes like 6 years on avg to graduate??!?! limited upper division course offerings!!
  • do you think is purposely done by the university...to take more of our money>?
  • I am a third year ECON student at SFU.  I tried to reigster for ECON 355,  345 and 325.  They were all full.  My registration date was the 22nd.

SFU is offering limited classes this summer and/or is taking in too many students.

    THIS BLOWS!
  • "or is taking in too many students."

that is the real reason.. way too many students now.. that's why the entrance requirements went up
  • It's summer, people go away go on holidays after 8 months of schools/teaching, deal with it. I've seen other departments offer way fewer courses with shitter profs or sessionals
  • and it is this kind of attitude that people like u will always eat shit from the 1 percent!
  • This is unbelievable. I wished the offered more classes or increased the class size at least... I'm checking everyday just to see the number of seats getting filled up. My registration date isn't even close! Completely unfair!
  • Some of the first year courses I want aren't been offered in the Summer. Kinda sucks.
  • so lucky that i can get all the courses that i want for this summer...although i have a crappy schedule and not so good professors...

ps: i am a bio student
