Macbook pro stolen

edited February 2012 in General
Hi, SFU
so my Macbook Pro was just stolen yesterday in AQ computer facility the first floor. It happened so fast less than a minute. My papers notes and everythings in the computer so basically I am doomed... Does the SFU security agency has like hidden camera in AQ where they observe everything? I know that there are many theives at SFU thesedays and I think they should install video cameras.. Has anyone had similar experience? Ive already reported the incident to the police and of course to SFU security.. Is there anything more I could do?

  • are you talking about the computer area besides robert c brown hall ? i don't think there is any security camera there
  • Yup... I was moving and left my computer first at the another desk, came back with my bagpack and computer gone.. lol.. I know it was clearly my fault to not being careful but the school should seriously start doing something.. there are so many thieves thesedays.. its like a jungle
  • it is not really your fault, school supposes to be a safe place, and as you said, it just happen within a minute.
but did you ask the people besides you whether any people see the thief or even his clothing, maybe security camera somewhere else record his face.
  • I did ask some people who were sitting besides me, but they were all doing something else and were not paying attention to other people.. Most people were asleep or were focused to their own business. I think I should talk to school security again and ask if they have any recording or anything.
  • good job idiot
  • ^unhelpful.

you can try to ask security, but these laptop thefts do happen often on campus (csil labs, library etc). unless you've asked someone to watch your stuff (which can be dangerous too since THEY might end up stealing it) or you have a trusted friend with you - always take your stuff with your whereever you go. somewhere very open and common like the AQ is an easy target. as for getting it back i dont think itll be possible. maybe try looking up craigslist or other sites to see if someone is selling the same and look at the post date.
  • My Mac Pro was stolen just 2 days ago when I finish my linguist mid term test, I went washroom with leaving my laptop in my bag just under my chair, cuz I thought it wouldn't take more than 3 mins to pee , when I came back I realized I m a such idiot that my laptop was gone.the thief was so quick to take action. I could not image how a thief was so ignoring the teacher in class and he/she must be a student in my class. I'm so upset I could trust this school . sfu is turning to a mess and the security is useless. My Mac was set a password the thief could not get into my privacy unless he dismantle it. This is not a top university where crime took place. So mad and disappoint at here!!!!
  • Crime takes place everywhere. Especially in public places, which people seem to forget includes SFU. While it sucks to have your stuff stolen, don't blame the school for your own lapse in judgement.
  • Exactly what Ryan said..
  • why would you even leave your stuff unattended for a second? you deserve your laptop to be stolen
  • leaving it in a room with people you don't know? idiots.
  • first world problems
  • School feels like a safe place, but there are thieves who target them exactly because they feel safe.  Nothing will happen in, say the library for months, and then there will be a wave of thefts.  It's a pain to take laptops everyone, but probably for the best, unless you want to see whether the bookstore has locks for sale.  They do for notebooksat least.

  • We should just steal laptops and leave them at the lost and found for training purposes :P
