Bisc 101, Bisc 102, Phys 140, Math 151

edited August 2011 in General

Hey fellow students,

Any comments on these 4 courses? Just starting university this september and don't really know what to expect!

Also as a side note, for phys 140, I chose alberding over kavangh - is this a good idea? Generally alberding's reviews are in the extremes and kavangh's are just generally bad... Talk about a dilemma! Any comments on these guys?

Thanks in advance!

  • BISC 101: this course is almost purely memorization. The lab portion of the course tends to be more difficult, with lower averages. The lab exams (at least at the Burnaby campus) were completely multiple choice, and not the easy kind (no way to easily eliminate choices). You really have to know your stuff to get a good grade. The lecture portion of the course was a bit easier, but the final does have a lot of material on it.

BISC 102: the lab exam is open book, but you have to both know your way around your lab manual very well (and have it completely filled out) and know the concepts fairly well in order to do well in the time allotted. Make sure you attend all of the labs and . It can be tempting to leave early, as the labs are somewhat boring. You have to pass the lab exam in order to pass the course. I found the lecture exams fairly easy. BISC 102 is less memorization and more understanding concepts.

CALC 151: This course is fairly difficult, especially if you did not take Calculus 12 in high school. Make sure you do all of the homework (which tends to take several hours per assignment) and extra problems. Although the rare student can get away with just studying the concepts and memorizing some rules, most students cannot do well without doing practice problems. The good news is that the course is usually marked on a curve.

I have not taken PHYS 140.
