  • Do whatever you find interesting. You only need to do the prerequisites for medical school to apply, beyond that, you can major in whatever you want. If you don't get into medical school, you can either find a job related to that major or do graduate studies in something your actually interested in.

If you're serious about medical school, make sure you start preparing for the MCAT early and begin (if you haven't already) volunteering.
  • I'm a neuroscience major. It's a good program to prepare you for medical school because all the required Kinesiology courses are similar to things taught in medical school like Histology, Anatomy and Physiology. But I think for med school if you do a Bsc in Behavioural Neuroscience you will need to take a few extra MBB and CHEM courses. Remember that to go into med school you don't actually need to finish your BSc, you can apply once you have all the required first and second year courses.

I really like the Neuroscience program, but not planning on going into med school myself. You have to think carefully about all the downsides of being a doctor. Almost every first year I've met in sciences wants to go into med school, but the question is do you really want a job where you risk getting infected with terrible diseases, where you will have to see people dying probably on a daily basis, and where you will have very little time initially for family, friends, or a life outside of medicine.

My advice is spend a lot of time googling MSc and PhD degrees in different neurosciency fields like cognitive neuroscience, behavioural neuroscience, comparative psychology, psychopharmacology, psychopathology and so on. After taking some third year courses you might have a better idea of what to do as well. The 3rd year Psyc courses don't have many pre-reqs apart from Psyc 280 so you can take them early on. I really enjoyed taking Psyc 383 (Psychopharmacology) and Psyc 388 (Biological Rhythms & Sleep).

  • I'm in neuroscience. I really like the content of the program, but course planning is a real pain in the ass so be warned. There is no advisor just for neuroscience so you have to go see both the psyc and kin advisor so get all important info. You also have to be really proactive to make sure all your prereq's (especially for the kin classes) line up properly, which is where I went wrong. Also, I find it really difficult to meet people in the program.

Basically though its the coolest major at SFU. by far. And is a wicked bragging point too cause everyone thinks you can control their mind ahahha.

If you want to go into med, you have to take a few extra courses (for UBC anyways). You have to take chem126 and chem 282 in addition to the required chems. Also, make sure you take MBB 222 and 321, which aren't required for neuroscience and take MBB 231 instead of 201 to fulfill your required mbb class. And you need bio 102 and two english classes.

What classes are you guys in this term? I'd love to know some other neuroscience students in my classes!
