Is a University Education "worth it" when it comes to career value?

edited March 2011 in General
Hiking brought up a great point in the chat box.. that a lot of people get degrees thinking their job prospects will be better with a post-secondary education. This may or not be the case, depending on the program and field you are in but I'd definitely like to hear what you guys think about this. Is a university education worth it, or is it just a waste of time?

  • i guess it depends on which field of work you go into.. obviously some careers value your education/expertise a lot more than others.. which is fair.. but i think a lot of people forget that education is an ongoing process.. graduating from university doesn't mean you're "done" with learning.. you still learn on the job.. through life.. etc etc... and i think a part of your career value comes from continuous learning and personal development..

so does a university education provide all that? somewhat.. but not all of it comes from there and not all of us get into that development phase during our university years.. book smarts is important but it's street smarts that get you to places..
