POL 100

edited February 2011 in General
Has anyone taken POL 100 last semester? How are his mid-terms?

Comments

  • Who's the prof? I took it in Fall 2009 with Logan Masilamani, so if you want more info about him I could be of help :)
  • I have the same prof! He's awesome. It's a little too late now but thanks anyway! :) The mid-term wasn't too
    bad.
  • Honestly, I had trouble with his midterm. I got a C- on it LOL. It was my first term and I had no clue what to expect. But the midterm is only 15%, so you can easily bounce back. I ended up with a B+ overall. He was my TA as well, and he marked the term paper very hard, so put in a lot of work. I thought my term paper for POL 100 was the best thing I've ever written before, and I just barely pulled off an A- on it.

Might sound picky, as an A- is a really good mark, but he deducted marks for seemingly insignificant reasons.
  • Wow. I've been hearing pretty much the same thing from a lot of people. Thank you for the tip though. Your mid-term was only 15%? It's 30% this term... hopefully I did okay on it.
  • Yeah, our class was 15% midterm, 15% tutorial participation/attendance, 35% term paper, 35% final. Good luck with it though!
  • Thanks for your tips!

Hey!!! I'm in that class too.  Yeah I think I did pretty good on the midterm(or essay because that's basically what it was) but who knows how they mark it.

    And our class is btw

    35% Paper

    30% Final

    20% Mid Term

    15% Tutorial Participation

    :-)
  • If you have Logan for your TA, like I did, it's pretty hard to get less than the full 15% for tutorial participation unless you never talk at all. Show up, talk on occasion, and you're good. Final was really easy I found. Paper was long for a first-year intro course, and it was intimidating in my first term because I had never written a paper more than 2 pages or so in high school and then I had to write a 9 page paper for this class.
  • @ Person: Oh, I thought  the essay was marked out of 20. Anyway thanks for clearing that up!

@ Desolate: No, I have someone else for a TA. Yeah that's exactly what I thought - I've never written more than 4 or 5 pages for an essay so I'm pretty nervous writing this paper. But considering the mark that you got on it, you did pretty well!
  • @Desolate Yeah I'm nervous about the paper too.  Longest one i've ever written is only 3 pages so 8-10 is a lot.

@Vivian -  The MT was out of 30 (10 MC, Essay worth 20) but not 30% of our course mark lol.  Hopefully they mark the MTs easy.  I think we get them back this week

Just try to think of a topic that interests you personally for the paper. I wrote mine about media censorship by the Chinese government, focusing primarily on censorship of the internet. I didn't find it that bad to write, because I found the topic I was researching was genuinely interesting and I enjoyed working on it as a whole. This class is at least nice because you can write about pretty much anything you want.
  • did any one remember the questions for final? Thanks.
  • I agree with Desolate about picking a topic you're interested in - it makes all the difference.  Check out the library course page when doing research for the term paper:
