My course schedule for next semester

edited December 2010 in General
Im going to be taking CMPT 150, CMPT 275, CMPT 307, CMPT363 next semester
Is this a tough schedule? I might drop 307 if 275 is a lot of work. If I drop the course do I get my tuition refunded for those 3 credits? And Im not sure about 150 now either...

See yah in CMPT 275. I don't have high hopes for that class...

  • 275 depends on your group. if you have a good group then you dont have to do much work.

307 is by most people considered to be the toughest cmpt course. so be careful.

150 is just an average cmpt course
  • if you have a good group then you dont have to do much work.

And by that, you mean, you have one or two guys doing most of the work, right?
  • Well, maybe some of you can share your experiences with regard to 275? This was my first term at SFU, so I don't yet have a good idea of what most of the profs, classes and classmates would be like...

Group work has usually been disappointing to me, so I doubt this will be an exception. "In the real world you don't get to choose who you work with", people will say. I'm guessing that the employer will at least do some kind of screening or filtering so you have better odds of working with skilled people...

I probably had an unlucky semester... I needed to get several things remarked.. probably 50% of my midterms and assignments had been incorrectly marked...

Now the co-op office sent out a mass e-email saying you need to finish BOL I and all the workshops by January 9th, or you can't work in the summer semester, yet no workshop offerings exist between the date the e-mail was sent and January 9th...

What is the logic in that?
  • I'm in the same boat for co-op. Finished BOL I, but can't do a workshop until January 15th. I emailed the co-op advisor last night so that I can hopefully get an exception.

Thanks for replying Desolate, it's kind of reassuring that I'm not alone...

The sad part is, I even asked if there was a deadline to complete the workshops by....

I got an answer saying that doing them on Jan 29th is perfectly fine and will not delay my co-op... I would go for the Dec 15th one, but I kind of need to keep that day free....

I sent an e-mail asking if they are serious, and what I'm supposed to do now

No reply yet of course... maybe I will try calling... which I hate.

Maybe if there is enough people they could offer a new workshop session before Jan 9th? It would probably be a smart thing to do.. but that may be asking a little bit much :(

Sorry if I've hijacked the thread... just not sure if a "Let's bitch about SFU" thread is acceptable...
  • its fine, im in the same boat as you and desolate :(
    thanks for the info farhan
  • Alright so I'm not alone! I'm sure they'll be able to make some exceptions (or I sure hope so)!

I'll let you all know if the co-op person emails me back.

275 is going to be a lot of work with a good group and an insane amount of work with a bad group. Taking it coupled with 307 is bold. I just finished 275 and was thouroughly impressed with the workload. That could have easily been 6 credits. Although, I did come out with a decent percentage, I have yet to see it mapped to a letter grade.

If you have the work ethic you should be fine. I know of others who have been successful doing more.

Anyone else who took 275 surprised by how bad everyone did on the final?
