That Tamil Ship
I keep hearing news about some Tamil ship full of illegal immigrants floating closer and closer to BC. They're going to let it land and then put them all in jail, then they'll probably get let out of jail, get put on probation, and end up living in Canada.
What's everyone's opinion on this? One of SFU's strengths is that it's a really international school, but I have mixed feelings about "refugees". My issue is this: If people keep running away from war-torn countries ravaged by poverty, those countries will stay that way forever.
The only way to improve the situation is for everyone to stay and FIX their own countries.
Spain was once under a dictatorship regime. It lasted decades and decades. Millions of Spaniards died fighting wars, and certain Spaniard dialects were forbidden. People who insisted on speaking their dialects were sentenced to death. There was extreme poverty. People didn't even have bathrooms.. they just used the streets. There was no education, people couldn't read or write. It was a terrible situation.
But did all the Spaniards leave and arrive en masse in other countries, claiming refugee status? No. Spaniards are not a significant minority in any other country, unlike for example Indians. Spaniards stayed in Spain and fixed their own country, bit by bit. Because they stayed behind and fought for their rights, Spain is now a successful first world country (I'm not taking into account Europe's recent financial problems, because recessions are affecting many first-world countries like the US). It has an excellent education system, free national health care, it is one of the most democratic governments in Europe, there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the extreme poverty has been eradicated.
In fact it has the 10th highest quality of life rating in the world.
So I'm just saying... sometimes if people stay in their countries and DO something about the problems, there will actually be some hope of improvement. If everyone just comes to Canada, the only thing that will happen is that the quality of life will become crap in both countries.

as for the ship? the government should put them in jail, give them some medical and food, then send them the fuck back.
Imagine if a homeless guy breaks into your house and starts living in your bathroom. You call the police and they throw him in jail for a week, but after he gets out, he's allowed to keep living in your bathroom. You are rightfully pissed off, and complain to the government, but they justify allowing him to stay because he doesn't have a good home to go back to.
i didn't hop on a fucking boat and hit the shores of vancouver and ask for a buncha free shit.
Sidenote: I got my citizenship this morning. I'm officially half white.
lets not drop the N bomb here. that would be racist
On topic... iono why bother jailing them. Should have taken the time to prepare another boat to take them back the other way. Or send them off to a deserted island, patrolled by the military so they can kill each other off one by one to see who's left standing? =P
Hope... are you also gonna tell me something you told Lixie MONTHS ago about something ruling the animal kingdom and not making much sense, as per usual?
