By-Elections!

edited December 2006 in General

(Personally, I'm a bit hacked off about this. I didn't see the call for nominations, and this electoral scheduling is way too sudden for my taste)

To: Members, Simon Fraser Student Society
From: Independent Electoral Commission, SFSS (sent via Student Services)

Fellow students:

There is a by-election scheduled this month to elect directors and officers
of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS). As a registered SFU student, you
are automatically a member of the SFSS and eligible to vote in this
by-election.

This email contains important information about the by-election, and we
encourage you to review all of it.

Note: by a judgment of Mr. Justice Ehrcke of the Supreme Court of British
Columbia given Monday (December 4, 2006), all of the positions being filled
by this by-election were vacated at the SFSS Special General Meeting held on
October 25, 2006, except for the position of Faculty Representative for the
Faculty of Health Sciences, which is a new position that has not yet been
filled.

Polling: regular and advance
----------------------------

Since the election was called relatively late in the term the regular
dates for voting mandated by the SFSS by-laws will occur on December 18 &
19. Since these days are after the end of the exam period, the Independent
Electoral Commission has scheduled advance polling to occur both this week
and next. The dates for advance polling are:

Burnaby Mountain Campus (lobby, W.A.C. Bennett Library): December 7, 8, 12,
15
Surrey Campus (Mezzanine): December 7, 8
Harbour Centre Campus (main foyer): December 15

All of the advance polls will be open from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Regular polling will occur in those same three locations on December 18 and
19, and the polls will be open on those days from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Please ensure that you bring your student card to the polling place in
order to ensure a speedy voting process.

About the Independent Electoral Commission
------------------------------------------
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is a group of students elected by
the Board of Directors to oversee elections, by-elections and referenda
within the SFSS. Members of the SFSS Board of Directors and Forum are not
permitted to serve on the IEC. By convention, no candidates for office serve
on the IEC.

The IEC is responsible for ensuring that the Society's by-laws and policies
regarding elections are followed, and for ensuring that the election is held
in a manner that is as democratically fair and accessible as reasonably
possible.

The IEC meets regularly during (by-)election periods, and the meetings are
open to any student who wishes to attend. If you have concerns about how the
election is being run, you are encouraged to contact the IEC and/or attend
its meetings.

During this election, the IEC meets regularly at 4:30 PM on Mondays, usually
in room MBC 2203. The IEC can be reached by email at sfss-iec@sfu.ca, or by
phone at (604) 268-6594.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. In closing, the members
of the Independent Electoral Commission would like to remind you that the
SFSS is your student society, and that it is your democratic right to vote
in its elections -- please exercise your right and vote.

Sincerely,

The Independent Electoral Commission of the Simon Fraser Student Society:
- Gavin Steininger, Chief Commissioner
- Jason Chan, Commissioner
- Mike Letourneau, Commissioner
- Rowan Sawyer, Commissioner
- Raul Ursic, Commissioner
