SFPIRG
I'll start this off by saying I would be completely in favour of revoking their fees.
I've always resented paying for SFPIRG. My reasons can be summed up by Graham Templeton's recent article in the Peak.
I would have no problem with them if they were just a club charging fees, but when every SFU student is required to pay fees to a politically charged organization that provides few tangible benefits for that money, it bothers me.
First, it's an exorbitant amount of money. $200,000!
Second, it should be spent on something that benefits students, not on salaries and administration. Buy works of public art for all I care. Get 40,000 cinder blocks and build a pyramid in the convo mall. Put the money into clubs and DSU's, or into the pub! Save up and implement a campus bike-sharing program. Anything would be better than paying their staff's salaries so they can .. research public interests .. or whatever it is they do.

The fact is that they don't do much of anything. Sure, I support some of the causes they support, but what are they actually doing? Nobody knows because they are so secretive and put a veil around all of their operations. Sadly enough, I actually agree with Sam Reynolds' opinion piece in last week's issue of The Peak. The DSUs are suffering right now, getting $600 per term to operate, while SFPIRG get over $60,000 per term to squander on salaries and issues that nobody knows about because they don't wish to involve the student body, who fund their operations, whatsoever.
Just my two cents.
*charges at Ph D thesis template  *
that said.. tuition is expensive as is with all that we currently need to pay.. so instead of trying to rack up our fees when we're currently going through a recession.. wouldn't it make more sense for these people/groups to fight in lowering tuition? they might just gain more support/exposure for doing that.. =\
and yes DAMN THAT REC FEE, i've been consistently paying it since 1st year and i've never even set a foot in that gym.. i don't even know where my gym tag is.. it would be nice if i could get a full refund on that..X) *daydreams about what she could buy with that money*
But still a bit mean. Not everyone has nights and nights of... um, bedtime fun.
