Parking @ SFU Surrey

edited January 2010 in General
Hey guys. I know there is free 3 hour parking at SFU Surrey, however, I have four hours of straight classes tomorrow and don't want a ticket (or get towed!). The reason I need to drive to school tomorrow is because I sprained my goddamn ankle and I'm now on crutches. I have a 10min break inbetween my classes and instead of moving it during that break, I was wondering if there were any "secret" spots near the school or whatever where I can park for free. If not, I'll just have to move my car during my break and be late for my next class.

Thanks!

Free 3 hours is for shoppers only and doesn't count for SFU students. I have no clue how they heck they could tell the difference, but I know people that have tried that and got a ticket. So just be careful.

I live in Surrey, but not in the area and I don't frequent the area except when going to SFU Surrey (for obvious reasons), so I don't know a really good alternate parking place. If you have a few classes there, next term enter the parking lottery. They normally have a ton of applicants, so getting a parking pass isn't super easy, but it's only $35 for the term if you do get chosen.

So yeah. Feel free to risk a ticket, though you could/probably will get away with it.

Park in front of Zellers. Go to where Best Buy is, and there's a huge stretch of parking lots there. Head all the way to the back end of the lot (in front of Zellers) and park there. It's not being patrolled by those cock suckers at Diamond parking. However, the lots near T&T, best buy and such are so don't park there. You can walk through the shrubs on the side and make your way to the front entrance.

Or you can let them give you a ticket and don't pay them. The tickets are written by a private company, so they can't touch your credit. Not only that, you're not legally obligated to pay those tickets back, and after one year, your ticket becomes invalid. They get around that by passing your information to different collection agencies until they give up. They will threaten you by sending a letter saying that they'll bring you to court unless you pay. In under any circumstances, do not pay them. If cost far more for the company to pursue legal action than for you to pay the ticket.

The people patrolling the lot will mark your car's tire with a chalk. If they come back in 3 hours and see the marking, you'll get a ticket. They can come back in 2 hours and give you a ticket if they want. They aren't going to remember which car is which, and there's no oversight for that shitty parking company.

Anyways, good luck. I have about $600 worth of parking tickets the last time I checked and I'm still not paying them back. It's probably around $1200 now with interests and all.

Phew that's a lot of text for a simple question.

Another thing: You may want to actually go to the mall and buy something. Then when DPS tickets you claiming you went into SFU Surrey, send in a photocopy of the receipt and politely say that yes, you WERE in fact shopping and just lost track of time.

May or may not work. I know people have contested DPS tickets this way before (usually DPS tries to ticket people claiming they walked off the lot to go somewhere else). One person owned DPS saying, "So my passport stamp proving I was out of the country when you mistakenly ticketed the wrong licence plate isn't proof enough?"

    :teeth:

I usually just buy a parking pass for surrey and head to burnaby via skytrain. If you want to park for free you can do it the zellers parking lot easy. A Guy in the parking lot DOES patrol every so often with a bike and puts chalk on the tires to tell how long a car has been there. JUst go back and move it every so often so the chalk isn't visible.

However you are on crutches so I don't know if you want to go through all that effort.

Also, I sprained my wrist badly about 3 weeks ago and it still hurts. Is this normal?

minimum heal time for a sprain is usually a month, after that you will still notice some discomfort for a few months after.

I park at their shoppers only parkade... i usually buy a snack at the food court and keep the receipt.

it saved my ass once. I got a ticket, but then i went to the front desk showed my subway receipt and they removed it . :D

3.99 for 3 hours of parking and a full stomach, can't get a better deal than that :)
