How was your first week at SFU?

edited January 2010 in General
Any students on the forum new to SFU? How are things going so far...any difficulties finding your classes or figuring out the lecture style system?

What about you guys returning to classes...how's everything going up there

    when are they not?

this semester was particularly bad.. in the years i've been in SFU i've never seen the bookstore lineup all the way up to 3rd floor..

Bookstore lineup on Monday only took about 45 minutes. It seemed like it would be worse, but it wasn't too bad.

Stressing out already and it'll likely continue for the rest of the term. I was doing arts classes and now I've shifted and I'm doing MATH 150 and CHEM 111 so it'll be interesting to see how things turn out. Just hard to keep up with paper assignments (which you have to do, but are worth 0% for MATH 150) and keep track of when LON CAPA assignments are due, but I'm sure after the first term doing LON CAPA you get used to it.

I was like WTF!? when I saw the lineups. Luckily, I had NO line-up to pick up my Upass yesterday so that was at least kind of nice. :)

    SO many cases.... rawr

doing all upper level crim courses this semester...should be an awesome one i hope =/
  • edited January 2010
2 UD crim and 2 UD psyc courses... they seem decent so far!

Lots of pressure though since I'm on AP lol... at least classes are spread out so I can somehow force myself to study more since I'm more frequently on campus thanks to having breaks!

I had a messed up first week. I got an email from VANOC saying they're offering me a co-op position, which threw my entire spring semester out the window. Mind you, they sent an email on New Years basically saying I didn't get a position. So, on Tuesday I had to run around the campus talking to Arts co-op and advisers to get everything straightened out. I was able to be approved as Sociology minor which will allow me to take some upper division courses in the summer. The weird thing is that it looks like I'll be taking upper division courses in the summer and then taking all lower-division ones in the fall.

@sfuboi + ikkaku: Which UD Crim courses are you guys taking? Maybe we're in the same class!

@siuying: Do you still have your textbook for 321 and 330?!

Yeah, the bookstore lineup was freakin' horrendous on Monday. Going back to Burnaby tomorrow and hopefully the line up won't be too bad.
  • edited January 2010
uh.. which textbooks are they using this semester? i might still have them... somewhere.. =x lol..

Just have 3, 300 level Bus courses this semester so the first week wasn't so bad. Just profs introducing the course and themselves. But finding people to buy used textbooks off of hasnt been so fun.

UGhhh Tell me about it.. Math 150 is a very time consuming course
I think i have to spend all my time for that class

Does anyone know which one Math Calculus classes is the easier one among them all (math 150, 151, 157 and ect)

    It's generally agreed upon (I think) that it goes 157 > 154 > 150 > 151 from easiest to hardest.

Are you taking 150 this term with Jamie Mulholland? If so we're in the same class :P

    321: The Practice of Qualitative Research. Hesse-Biber, S.N., & Leavy, P. (2006).

330: An Introduction to Canadian Criminal Procedure and Evidence, Third Edition. Brockman, J. & Gordon Rose, V. (2006).

Let me know if you have 'em and I will buy them off you!!!

Btw, which courses are you taking this semester? I just dropped 450 because the course project sounded insane! Plus, a 30-40 page paper?! I DON'T THINK SO!!! Not when I'm doing qualitative research methods atleast... haha.

Oh, tell me about it. I took a course just previously, in the fall. Most graduate courses are usually seminar type when they're taught through TRIUMF with a couple of desultory homework assignments. This one? Oh my god.

THREE homework assignments, one per month - and not just a couple softball questions. Oh no. And on top of that, TWO presentations + papers AND an oral final exam.

    URK!

And that was when I had a thesis defence lurking in the background plus TAing chem 121.

So yeah, if I could have dropped the class I would have. I knew another guy who decided to do that, but I needed to get this course credited towards my Ph. D so I had to stick it out.

That's what I heard too, and I wanted to take it with someone who knows what he's talking about because, while I've never been terrible at math, it is definitely not my strong suit by any means. I'm planning on utilizing the Calculus Workshop a helluva lot throughout the term.

Generally, if you know which classes you are taking the next semester, try finding your used books at the end of the current semester. Plenty of people want to unload their books as soon as exams are over, but there isn't as many people looking. Less competition :)

Yea i hear you, I prefer to be in a harder class with a prof who can actually make me understand the material that he/she is teaching.

Me too.. i am probly going to be in the workshop every other day
Btw good luck on the dig test on monday!!

Thanks, you too. I'm just about to start reviewing for it... will probably go to the workshop tomorrow between my Chem lecture and lab.
