Social networking
Well I already posted about how I dislike 'my generation' but on a related note.. does anyone else have a great disdain for social networking? I know, it's ironic. This is a forum after all. I like forums. I like posting on imdb. Between 2000-2004 I even liked IRC. But since then I have pretty much totally ignored msn messenger / chat / yahoo messenger / etc. I don't have a facebook. I don't have a myspace.
I don't just not have them but I actually hate them. I hate how people waste so much time on facebook and myspace sending each other little glittery pics that just say WASSUUP?!? It really annoys me when I go to a lecture and 90% of the class is on their laptops checking their facebooks. Then they complain that they didn't get As. Isn't it obvious?
There's just something about networking that seems wrong, so fake, and like McDonald's employees when they tell you to have "a nice day". It's all about people you don't really know, having thousands of acquaintances you rarely even see, and wasting time.
I don't think it's good.

The whole point of social media is to make things more convenient for us which is also the point of updating technology. But then again and as you stated earlier, older forms of communication (ie. phoning someone or MSN) are becoming obsolete.
Sounds like you're living in the wrong generation... or just need to adapt to the new times! Haha.
I think blogging is actually a good thing because it involves sitting down and writing about an opinion, event, etc. But social networking not so much - since it involves collecting 'friends' like trophies.
When a friend wants to plan a party, they create a facebook event, and invite everyone. It's a handy, central checklist of who's going and who's not going. It provides information and a wall for people to post messages on.
It's the same for sharing videos, or links. Rather than msn everyone on your contact list: "hey look at this interesting article", you can just post it on facebook or twitter instead.
It's a useful tool, and that's all.
The whole blogging plague has pretty much killed off what was left of proper well grounded journalism. It's the system of "getting the news out first" that really ruins the entire blogging experience. When your site's revenue depends on being the first to report something, then you don't have time for fact checking, copy editing, or even competent writing. What you end up with is a lot of hack writers pumping up the slightest rumours just to get page count. Journalism has pretty much been transformed into mindless regurgitation of information.
Granted, there are a few blog writers who do excellent content driven work, but that's mostly because their sites are nestled in niche markets. The mass majority of major blogging sites are all just a place where a bunch of news editors rush out hot information to the public without any consideration for quality.
and to OP, i think u are stressing out on stuff that really shouldnt concern u, u use words like 'hate' on things that you can just choose not to involve yourself with
maybe spend time on improving your own quality of life, rather than hating on things that other ppl enjoy
social networking/media wont go away any time soon, if anything, its gonna get bigger, much bigger
Why oh why can't we revive those times.
