Minor in Business Admin

edited December 2009 in General
I'm currently in the major business program and in the second year, I've only completed the lower division requirements but I realized I don't enjoy business all that much.

So now I'm considering majoring in communications, and instead minor in Business admin.

Any thoughts about the change? Do people often minor in business admin? I personally haven't heard of anyone minoring, only majoring. In my case, if I switch to the minor none of my courses will be wasted, so that's pretty good.

Is a minor in Business admin any useful in finding a job (ie. bank) or is it a waste of time. Should I just suck it up and finish a full major program.

Thanks!

A minor in business is like having no minor at all. They just laugh in your face for having one.

I think it depends on what you want to do when you graduate. What area(s) of concentration were you planning on doing in business? I think if you were planning on doing marketing then a communications degree might help you to find similar jobs. There is a lot of overlap between those areas.

On the other hand, if you were planning on doing something like accounting or finance, I don't think that a communications degree with a minor in business would be as good for getting jobs in that area.

There is also the option to do a joint major in business and communications:

but that won't really help you to avoid upper level business courses.

If you don't like business, then don't bother going for the major. It's pointless getting a major you don't like. If you don't like business now, you probably won't like it four years from now.

Thanks for all the above suggestions.

What if I wanted to switch my major entirely, to something like Psychology or Criminology for example, would my credits I've already obtained be used somewhere? (Besides WQB)

What I mean is, do most majors require you to take courses outside of the major study?

You still need electives, and that's what your credits that don't fill the WQBs will go into.

I used to be in business until I realized that most business people were the scrums of the earth, so I just transferred into communications and history and the transition was pretty simple.

I totally vote you should major in Chemistry. Come join the dark side, we have -OH's. ;)

Am kidding. Good luck in whatever choices you make regarding your new major.
    :teeth:

Switching now to a Crim major would delay your graduation quite a bit. There are a ton of lower division Crim classes that need to be done... something like 15. That is, including the classes from outside of Crim that are needed for the major program (like SA 150).
