Question about assigned readings.

edited September 2009 in General
Okay well today was my first day as a freshman, so I'm still kinda clueless about quite a bit of stuff. So my only class today was POL 100, where we basically just went over the content in chapter 1 and the syllabus for the term. However, we were told to read the tutorial guide about Quebec nationalism for our tutorials next week and the lecture next week deals with Chapter 2 and part of Chapter 3, which deals with cultural pluralism and identity.

So, my question is, should I be reading chapter 2 and the part of chapter 3 before the lecture since the tutorial right after next weeks lecture will deal with this? Or is just reading chapter 1 and the tutorial guide for next week fine?

If there isn't a definitive answer, maybe I'll just email the prof. :P

Ideally you should be reading the chapter covered before the lecture about that chapter, but I doubt the majority of people really do that. Though I do.

You should read it before the tutorial next week because you'll use the tutorial to clear up any questions you have about the material.

haha, when I took the same course with the same prof in the summer, my TA said the readings were crap and he was going to ignore them.

With your syllabus, whatever appears in that week (say, chapter 2 and 3), you should ideally read both chapters before the lecture. This way, you'll have somewhat of a clue to what the prof is saying. With the readings, read them before the tutorial so you're able to discuss it in tutorial.

generally speaking you should have all of them read. for upper division history you should definetly have it read. for lower division courses (most of them) you can skimp by with just skimming over them and reading enough to bs some conversation in tutorial.

Alright sounds good. Thanks for the responses. :)

But boy is some of this material dry, especially for HIST 110. :\
Thank God Ede seems like an awesome prof though.

He was actually the instructor for my tutorial today as well, but we might end up getting a TA eventually. If HIST 110 is the class you did with him, do you know how the final was structured?
