Economics CLASSES for Fall 2009

edited August 2009 in General

Hello.
If a student whose major is Economics is reading this - or whoever who understands my premise - I would like to extend my deepest gratitude if you're able to help me.
I've been sending e-mails to all the Economics Advisers in a daily basis with the following question, though I haven't received a single answer.

...

"I've been adding some of the courses that I'll be taking next semester according to the "Requirements for Graduation" sheet that you proportioned me last week. My plan is to take 5 courses, and so far I've been able to add 3.
What about the following classes: ECON 250 - "Economic Development in the Pre-Industrial Period" AND ECON 252 - "Historic Transitions to Modern Economic Growth"? I can't find them anywhere, and it looks like they haven't been offered for the past two years at SFU.

According to the Requirements for Graduation, in the part of GROUP REQUIREMENTS, second section, I have listed ECON 208, 250, and 252, meaning that I have to choose one of those three. None of them are being offered for Fall 2009.
In their places I have added ECON 210 - "Money and Banking" and ECON 260 - "Environmental Economics." However, both of them are currently closed and are not exactly what I was interested in in the first place.

What can I do given the circumstances?"

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

perhaps emailing them everyday is not such a great idea.

However, I do think that there are 17 choices for your majors group requirements as per the calendar(p106):

    Group Requirements
To meet the requirements for the major program,
students must include at least one of the following,
with a grade of C- or higher.

    ECON 102-3 The World Economy
    ECON 104-3 Economics and Government
ECON 110-3 Foundations of Economic Ideas
ECON 208-3 History of Economic Thought*
ECON 250-3 Economic Development in the
    Pre-industrial Period*
ECON 309-5 Introduction to Marxian Economics\ECON 353-4 Economic History of Canada
    ECON 354-3 Comparative Economic Institutions
    ECON 355-4 Economic Development
ECON 404-3 Methodology of the Social Sciences
ECON 409-3 Seminar in Economic Thought
ECON 450-3 Seminar in Quantitative Economic
    History
ECON 451-3 Seminar in European Economic History
ECON 452-3 Seminar in Economic Prehistory
ECON 453-3 Seminar in the Economics of Education
ECON 455-3 Seminar in Economic Development
ECON 490-3 Seminar in Public Choice

*starred the ones that you mentioned minus econ 252 since not in list.

Are you sure there are not others there that you are interested in? Sometimes a certain course isnt offered a whole lot. I know that the second 3rd year spanish course is offered like once every 2 or 3 years. Maybe this is the case with the econ courses you mentioned above.

They didn't email me back either even though I asked a question two weeks back...

    probably just busy.

If you wait long enough I am sure the courses will be offered. If you don't want to wait then you should different courses from that list.

Some courses are offered very rarely, if ever. I've wondered on numerous occasions whether some of them were creations of specific professors who have retired, and the department never asks anyone else to pick them up. There was a 300 level econ course that I wanted to take, but I looked back and found that it hadn't been offered since like 2001.

Anyway, just FYI, ECON 355 is a great one to take from that list because it also satisfied your upper division Writing requirement.

You only need to take 1 course out of the 17 offered in the group requirement. 355 is a great suggestion.

For your lower division requirements you need to take 2 ECON 200 level courses or BUEC 280.

BUEC 280 is still open. I would advise you to take that.
