The Job Hunting Thread

edited April 2009 in General
Hello everyone,

Since Summer is coming up, I figure many of us will be looking for summer job to help pay for our ever rising tuition fees, book costs, and any other activities. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to start a job hunting thread, where we can ask each other questions related to to job hunting and job seeking.

Sincerely,

Student0667

Q: When you are applying for a job via E-Mail, are there any rules to follow?

Q: When your prospective employer asks you to submit a resume, should you also submit a cover letter?

Ask away!

First Question: Make sure your spelling is correct and that you don't use improper language such as slang.

Second Question:Why Not? It can't hurt to help supplement your resume.

Another good question....Where are some places you will be applying? It seems like not a lot of places in BC are hiring right now...

A lot of youth camps are springing up during the summer. Those are good, and you get to stay outdoors which is a plus. YMCA is a major one.

    1) When applying for a job via email you are generally only sending a resume.

    2) When they ask for a resume, they will usually ask for a cover letter as well if they want one.

Q: Would it be weird to submit a different resume in an interview? When i submitted my resume to a summer camp it was more tailored to customer service, but I think I should resubmit one that highlights my volunteer work with kids. It's pretty much the same thing, except Volunteer Work is before Work Experience and my duties are more specified...

Would it seem like I'm putting effort in the trying to get the job or I'm trying to BS my way in?

You should always BS your way in to jobs. I'm serious.

I'd generally not switch them up, the whole point of the interview is to fill in blanks in your resume, and emphasize your strengths.

Well, that reply came late, I had my interview today =P

I gave her a different resume and said, "this is a different resume tailored to my strengths."

But I didn't realize I had to live up at SFU for this camp job!!! I have no idea if I should take it or not now... =T

I just don't want to look like some damn keener or an arrogant jerk in my job application, especially if that job is nothing professional, established, or even "serious".

Well, if you live up here, at least you don't have to wake up at 6:30AM to make it to HIST 102's 9:30AM tutorial.

BTW, did they say anything about who's paying for your stay up in SFU, if you accept the job offer?

Yeah that's one of my pros... I'm having a lot of trouble deciding though.

No, I forgot to ask, I was too caught off guard that I had to live there (didn't show it though =P) and I didn't ask. She hinted that there was a high possibility that I'll get the job though... If she calls I'll ask and decide depending on this as well as the pay =T

From past experience, Craigslist is one of the worst places to look for jobs. Since so many lazy people sit at home firing off resumes to any jobs that look interesting, yours usually gets lost in the inbox. The barrier is just too low, so you barely get any replies back (if any).

I kinda like the way that http://www.eluta.ca is set up, but the jobs are mostly full time serious career jobs...so more if you are finished your degree.

Yeah I really don't think I can do this job with 3 courses... I saw the schedule for last year, 7:30AM -11:00 PM. How am I possibly going to finish my assignment and things in this time?

So either the job or the courses... uggh... I wish they would respond before the 9th, which is unlikely

Wow, that is a ridiculous number of hours to work for a day. Did you apply for an outdoor program? or is it one of the indoor ones? I know when I was working at the park last year, I was exhausted after 6 hours in the sun.

It's a summer camp. Like a sleepaway camp, I guess. All the kids are from different parts of the world so they stay up at SFU for 2 months or so and I have to be there too.
