Album Review: Beyoncé -- I Am Sasha Fierce

edited March 2009 in General
Hey, fellow TalkSFU'ers, as-you-know, I'm an avid writer (of reviews -- music, movies, etc) I've written one review for The Peak (One of the December 2006 Issues on a Nas CD) Anyway, I'm currently writing reviews for fun, to be posted on my website (www.hippaul.com) Anyway, here's my latest review, on Beyoncé's I Am Sasha Fierce.

Please give me any feedback/comments, negative or positive. Thanks

A sure sign of a good CD is the first smash single being put as the opening song. In this day and age where many hip-hop / R&B singers often put their singles right in the middle of album fillers, Beyoncé makes sure she catches the listener’s attention right off the bat with “If I Were A Boy” from her latest album “I Am… Sasha Fierce”.

To someone around my age, the days of Destiny’s Child were long ago. I still remember them with Wyclef, singing “No, No, No” and I also seem to have memories of having a crush on LeToya (although it’s murky). But those days are gone, as evidenced by Beyoncé’s solo project Crazy In Love (which was… wait for the *drum roll* - five and a half years ago now).

Personally, I wasn’t convinced by Beyoncé as a solo artist until her song “Speechless” off the Dreamgirls Movie Soundtrack came out. On the other hand, this article is not about my personal memories of B. It is about B.’s alter-ego – Sasha Fierce.

“I Am… Sasha Fierce” is essentially two albums in one. Disco one contains mellower songs from Beyoncé. (I’ve always liked her softer side, see: Speechless) The second disc is purely Beyoncé’s “freak’um dresses” and “Crazy In Loves”. I found myself singing to songs like “Radio-o-o-o-o” and “a-Diva-is-the-female-version-of-a-HUSTLA”. And of course who can deny the appeal of “Single Ladies”, forever immortalized IMO, by the Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake parody on SNL?

“I Am… Sasha Fierce is a combination of R&B, pop, rap, swagger (lol), and rock instrumentals. It is definitely a “lady’s anthem CD. Even if you’re a guy, or not into R&B, you may find the live instrumentals to many songs refreshing. Essentially, there’s something for everyone, and that's why I rate this album 5 “I’m in love w/ my radio’s” out of 5!
