Health Plan -> Not impressed.

edited May 2009 in General
I was on Co-Op last semester, and we had a fantastic health plan (100% prescription coverage). Of course, I stocked up on my refills before I left (a few days before Christmas).

I got to use our new Undergraduate Health Plan for the first time today. Went to refill my one prescription antihistamine (Nasonex) and two asthma medications (Advair and Ventolin).

Apparently, Advair and Nasonex are not covered by this plan (neither of them have a generic equivalent that I know of, BTW. I'd gladly take the generic equivalent if there was one). I just paid $175 for about a month's supply of drugs that keep me breathing. Awesome. Every other plan I've had in the past covered these from 80-100%.

Not impressed. I'll be calling them this week.

Phil

    *I'm* semi-impressed with this plan now that I discovered it covers travel insurance. I was about to cancel it too...woo.

    Since nobody is posting anything, I may as well stimulate some discussions by sharing the result of my health plan's test run...

    After checking in with the receptionist, I immediately informed the attendant of my new health plan. She said that I am not the first SFUer to use this health plan and a girl removed all four of her wisdom teeth a few days ago. She paid only $100 and the remaining $500 is paid for the our insurance company. Ok, now I am impressed...

    Now that I am aware that I am covered (to what degree, let's talk about it later), I had the usual X-Ray scan plus the one where they scan my whole head. Then, onto my usual cleaning.

    Onto the billing portion, my bill this time is $208, but our insurance company cover up to $160. Not bad on a first run. Now, I am just waiting for my eye checkup and probably a pair of new glasses.

    Huh? How come you pay $208 and the girl only pays $100? How are they calculating this?

    Allow me to clarify, my whole visit (x-rays, cloride, cleaning, the cooler x-ray, etc.) costs $208. However, because I have a health plan, I only have to pay $48 because the remaining $160 is covered by our insurance company.

    My dentist joined the StudentCare Network so I'm pretty much fully covered for most things :)

    Until August 31st, 2009. After that point (if the BoD agrees to continue with our broker), we will have the opt-in/opt-out period again, for a full year of coverage (~$184.85 for health and dental).
