Language 11

edited February 2009 in General
I have a friend who is trying to get into SFU Arts for the summer semester. She's gotten all the paperwork done, sent in her transcripts, and she's waiting for them to send her a letter...but on the SIS online, it says that she's short credits or something. She thinks it's cause she never took a Language 11. She took her four provincials, and has her Math 11.

So, how important is it to have a Language 11? Has anyone had any experience, or know anyone who has been able to have that requirement waived for them..? Would it be possible for her to just take a language in her first semester or something..?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! :D

Well, the problem is that she never pursued any language past the BCED required Language 10, cause she never thought she would be applying to SFU.

I just wanted to know whether or not she had any other options besides being set back another semester just to complete a Language 11.

I'm pretty sure you have to have a Language 11 to get into SFU as well as many other post-secondary institutions.

Yes, a Language 11 or Beginner's Language 11 is one of the Grade 11 requirement to get into SFU. I do not think there is any sort of waiving or exemption possible.

Actually, she might be able to take the english proficiency test.

I'm not sure, but why the hell are they not making kids take english past grade 10? Or language, or are english and language different things? Back in my days school was way different.

If the missing credit is indeed Language 11, she should probably take summer school and get the Lanuage 11 credit and hope to get in during Spring 10.

Randomuser, I think shadesofgrey is refering to Lanuage 11 as in Mandarin 11, Spanish 11, Japanese 11, German 11, and French 11...

So yes, English and Lanuage are two completely different things.

Nono, English (or Communications, or some other ESL variation) has to be taken right up until grade 12, it's about the only mandatory course that has to be taken.

Language is like French, Spanish, Mandarin, etc. Languages that will be of essentially no use to you, because you'll either have forgotten most of it shortly after learning it, or what you learned was so basic that you can hardly apply it when you really need to use it. =P

I think there is a way. If your friend is chinese, then mandarin should be no problem (or if she already knows another second language). As long as she can pass the language provincial, she will get the credit for it (regardless of whether she actually took a lang 11 course or not).

Geeze, I was kind of hoping you WON'T mention this trick. But, oh well, you opened the Pandora's Box...

Shi2's method of taking Mandarin to fulfill the Lanuage 11 requirement is an excellent idea because she is almost guarantee to pass the course. Plus, the she doesn't really have to learn a new lanuage.

If she already knows another language proficiently, apply for the provincial outside of school for credit and you're done.

Language 11 for BC covers a lot of languages: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Russian, French, Dutch, Japanese, German, Punjabi, and more.

Damn. She is Chinese. but white-washed CBC. So that wouldn't work for her either. -__- But thanks anyhow.
