Not a SFU student.. yet.

Hi guys, I'm currently in grade 12 and I have applied to SFU for Sept 2009.

However, I'm really clueless to what to do next. My application has been received and I've paid my fees but now I'm just stuck.

(BTW I applied for Business (1st Choice) and Arts (2nd Choice) )

I haven't started self reporting yet.. but should I have done so already? It's just that my marks aren't at the best state right now (I'm only at an 80% average on my 1st report card) and I kinda want to wait for my 2nd term report card. (That comes out in early March) Are we allowed to use marks that we have in class as on now? They're not on my 1st report card, but I want to use my CURRENT marks. Can I use them on my self report?

Any advice? I'm really lost and I honestly don't know what to do.

Please and Thank yous!

I think you should report the grades that are in your report card. I think they check, especially for Business because you need a certain average to get in.
You should report the grades in your report card because they're not going to waste their time having you prove that on Feburary 20th, 2009, you had a 90% average or something. They'll be checking the average on your report cards.

    - When should I report? As soon as you have some midterm marks for your second term – usually around the end of February. Significant grade changes can be made until April 15.
    - What do I report? Final marks for grade 11 courses and interim or final marks for grade 12 courses. If you have a grade of TS (Transfer Standing), enter a grade of 50% for that course.
I recall them telling me last year that for courses that I didn't have a report card mark for yet, to just either use my grade 11 final marks or consult your teacher for your best-suited mark at the time. You can pretty much put whatever for now and just change it along the way. Self-reporting right now is mainly for early admission offers/scholarships and stuff.. they do check your grades later with the Ministry though if you're way off for final confirmation.

But to directly answer your questions, you should have been self-reporting this whole time (though it wouldn't have made too big a difference), and yes you can just use the marks you have in class right now. Just try to update them when your real report mark comes out.

Don't worry, most of us are here to help.

If you couldn't get into Business and get into Arts instead, you can easily. transfer to Business. All you need is a CGPA of 3.0 to transfer from anywhere to Business. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Yes, you should have start reporting your marks already. Also, unless SFU changed their system, I believe you can submit your mark over and over again until a certain date. Therefore, if your marks is not quite good right now, you should still submit it even if it is your current mark right now.

By the way, don't feel too stressed out about your high school mark. Like I said to everyone, SFU accepts EVERYBODY as long as you are over 80%.

    Tips for success at university:

    1. Don't listen to Student, he is just angry with SFU.
    2. Take RateMyProfessor with a grain of salt, the majority of the time it is way off reality.

Wow, thanks so much for the replies!!

Oh another quick question, is it absoutely mandatory to submit Grade 11 marks? And what course marks should I submit? I have a full time table right now, but the only grade 12 provincially examinable courses I have are Geo, Math, French, English and First Nation Studies.

Do I need to submit my Accounting and Marketing marks as well?

Thanks a bunch guys. You guys have no idea how much I was panicking. Haha

    You are very welcome.

Wait, SFU don't even looks at Grade 11 marks. Still, submit your Grade 11 marks because I guess SFU is more concerned about rather you have taken the course instead of now good you were in the course. You can get like 51% in all your Grade 11 courses and they won't even care. All they look at is Grade 12 marks.

You high school counsellors need to do their homework!
And what course marks should I submit? I have a full time table right now, but the only grade 12 provincially examinable courses I have are Geo, Math, French, English and First Nation Studies.
Well, you have more than enough "provincially examinable courses", so you are in good shape.

Back in 2006, I submitted everything, even my Acting 12 mark (Don't ask!).

But now, they only look at Grade 12 "Provincially examinable courses" now...

Since you are still in high school, can you answer this question for me? What is going on with the provincal exams? Do you even have to write the thing anymore?
Do I need to submit my Accounting and Marketing marks as well?
They don't look at it anymore. But if they ask for it, submit it.
Thanks a bunch guys. You guys have no idea how much I was panicking. Haha
    Relax, this is SFU.

Provincal exams are no longer mandatory for SFU and UBC I can't say for other universities and post-secondaries.) - aside from English 12.

However if you do choose to write it and happen to receive say a 50%, they're saying they won't count it if it brings down your final mark. On the other hand, if you write it, and score a 99.8% on it and it ups your mark, then they will count it.

Basically, they're taking the better mark. It's a win, win situtation! I'm definitely going to write it.

    Thanks again!

Wow, I wish it was like this for me back when i was in high school! From what I remember, I self-reported the grades that I had, including my Grade 11 ones. Then when my final marks came out, SFU received my high school transcript and updated everything.

Anyway good to hear you're interested in SFU Business. I'm in the program right now and am really enjoying it :)

Here is information about past GPA cutoffs for SFU Business to help you get an idea of what they're looking for:
    http://business.sfu.ca/bba/the-program/applying/requirements/past-gpa-reqs.php

You would fall under Category 1 (Direct from Secondary School).
The GPA requirements for each semester depends on the GPAs of the people applying with you, so there is really no set cutoff.
In case you don't get in, you can still take the lower level business courses and apply for entry later. I heard there's a slightly better chance of getting in if you're transferring from another faculty/program at SFU.

    Good luck!

I guess the ideal method to get into Business from other faculty is to take some easy Breadth courses plus one or two (MAX) Business course (Ex: ECON-103 and ECON 105) in the first year just to see if Business is really for you. If not, no harm done, you finished your Q-credit.

MMM... business is really competitive right now. Like... REALLY competitive. Get those marks up and you'll be fine :)

I think you were suppose to self report already...
Because my bro did and got accepted last last week.
  • edited February 2009
^Unless they changed the system, I believe that it is your high school's responsibility to submit your official transcript to SFU. Back then, all I did was self-report my grade until a certain date and then sign a permission form allowing my high school to submit my marks to UBC, UVIC, and SFU and they took it from there.

Vonnie is right. Back then, I remember receiving an email from SFU about being conditionally accepted and they would later send you a fancy package telling you the same thing.

P.S Are you going to tell him about TalkSFU?
  • edited February 2009
Oh good lord. I hate to say this, but why the hell don't counselors tell us things like this?! Half of the time when I go look for them, they're either too busy or not even at school! I feel like I'm walking in blind half of the time.

I agree Student0667, my sister is in her 2nd year at SFU and she does not recall having to send in transcripts of any sorts. Then again, she couldn't even remember how she did self-reporting.

Well, if he got better offers and commuting is not too big of an issue for him, then it is probably best for him to not come here...

LOL. Don't be a drama queen, it's not too bad here.
