I think ghosts are a real phenomenon. But I don't think they are what we popularly think they are. What exactly they are, I am not sure. But I doubt they are dead people's disembodied souls, because I don't see 'soul' working that way.
I have witnessed a ghost as least once. My friend and I both saw a poltergeist that picked up two aerosol cans in our bathroom, gently moved them over, and placed them down somewhere different. She and I will never forget it -- I shiver just typing this. This is not the first time my friend has witnessed strange movement of things in her vicinity -- she seems to be one of those people who just seems to attract paranormal phenomena. But this is the one only one I was witness to.
I'm just happy I've never seen a white, humanoid shape with a distinct face. That would make me go completely apeshit.
I was once staying at a place house sitting, and my temporary room was in the attic level, and in this bedroom there was a door to the attic.
This room used to be a room of prayer and shit before the current residents moved in.
Anyway, I had seen the movie the Amityville Horror, or whatever so it may have made me really jumpy, but the first few nights I would wake up at about 3-4AM and hear ticking in the room from the heater. It would freak me right out and I went back to sleep shaken.
Then after a few days I was too afraid to even go in the room when it was dark out, and I started sleeping on the couch.
After two weeks I got the fuck out of there.
I don't know if it was anything to do with ghosts, but there was a creepy vibe and I had never been so scared as an adult.
Thankyou, now this thread is going to turn into one hell of a paranormal discussion thread. First of all, I would like to state that I full heartedly believe in the existance of extra-terrestrial lifeforms (aka aliens) because this universe is simply too massive for us to be alone.

I believe in ghosts, but not aliens. They creep me out. I've read/heard too many stories.
xxk1nky, how can you NOT believe in aliens?
Like I said above, the universe is simply too massive and contain many unknown and mysteries. Therefore, jumping to conclusion that we are alone when we still haven't even left our galaxy maybe too quick. Even on our own planet, there are still many undiscovered creatures lurking in the canopy of the Amazon or in the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Also, these extra-terrestrial lifeforms may have COMPLETELY different requirement for life. For us humans, we need things like water and oxygen. Since we have these views of what is needed for life to exist, we dismissed the possibility for the existance of extra-terrestrial lifeform because we haven't found a planet with water and oxygen. However, have these theorists consider that the aliens may have a COMPLETELY different set of requirement for life? In fact, I got a feeling that their "biological makeup" would be completely different from all lifeform on earth altogether. I am not sure if I can even use the "biological makeup."
Despite my belief in aliens, I DO NOT believe that they have visited us before nor have they contributed in any way, shape, or form, to human civilization. To put it frankly, aliens didn't build the Pyramid or Earth is a prison camp created by an inter-galactic warlord (you know who you are!).
One thing is for sure, they will look NOTHING like us (yes, no Mr. Spock, not even Jar Jar) because their planet (or planets) will be so different from us that they would have to develope COMPLETELY to meet different needs.
I would like to say I don't believe in ghosts, but I think I saw a few when I was living in my old house. But then again I was young, it could've just been my imagination.
the most scared ive ever been in my life was after i saw an episode of x-files with this creepy Indian beggar dude in it he had no legs and would roll around on this wooden plank and appear in places he had no access to :0 ...like out of windows and shit
i dunno what this has to do with ghosts but i felt it was necessary to tell my story
i believe in aliens as well as ghosts.. i've had too many encounters with the latter to have me not believe in them.. but this one really freaked me out...
i once played the ouija board with a friend.. and no it wasn't those boards you buy a toys r us.. this was a real board passed down from her family.. we had to wait for a while.. but when the candles around us flickered and i thought it was just the wind but my friend told me the no windows in the room were open.. and that was when the planchette moved and fucking spelled out a name that we both knew.. i never told my friend about this.. but i actually felt someone behind me while we were playing.. =S
and i didn't dare play the chinese version of it.. because it's been told that if you invite it in and you don't ask them to leave properly.. it won't go away and will follow you.. o.O beats me why chinese ghosts are such a prick though.. geez..
Well, I am surely glad that I am not the only one who believe in the existance in extra-terrestrial lifeform.

Heyhey, everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion!
I'm also a believer of aliens for basically the same reasons you listed.
Ok, never thought of it this way. But still, we have more chances of making contact with alien lifeform than communicating with ghosts. It is not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN.
A little something I created...
I can also make a "I believe in Ghost" poster if anyone wants it.
I once was dating this girl who had a "third eye" as she calls it, but I didn't know that until this one time. After a going out for a light dinner, she told me she wanted to go off roading, away from the city where not a lot of people and cars pass by. So I thought to myself damm this girl is probably the freaky adventurous type, so that got me excited.
An hour of driving to nowhere later, we found the perfect spot. I pulled over to the side of the road where it was filled with high uncut grass (or it was probably a forest, i'm unsure), and on the other side of the road seemed like a wide farmland, again unsure because I just turned the engine and lights off.
So there we were, about to get all jiggy and shit. She stopped to drink from her bottle of water and all of a sudden started peering out of my windshield as though she was trying to read something small off of the glass. She turned to me wide-eyed and whispered about seeing a figure of a faceless lady standing still just in front of my right headlight. I couldn't see anything but that hella creeped the fuck out of me right there. I told her to not say shit like but insisted it wasn't a joke and she was starting to panic. Creeped me out more, I got chills all over me, so I made sure all my windows are closed and doors locked. I turned the engine back on and started backing up (apparently trying not to run over this lady). She tried hard not to look at the spot where the lady stood, but she could still it there standing still. I quickly made my u-turn back to fuckin civilization.
If you haven't seen ghosts, being with someone who can is probably just as scary.
I do not believe in ghosts. However, I do believe the spirits of our ancestors continue to live on in another world and watching over us.
Does that mean they watch you when you masturbate?
I believe in ghosts, and my old house, back when I lived in Fredericton was quite the hotspot. Everybody in my family who lived there at the time has at least one story. They take some explaining, so if I remember to, I'll explain at a meet-up some day.
Statistically, it has been shown that there's definitely a probability of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe besides us. So yeah, I believe in aliens (non-human intelligent life) as well.

not to creep you out more.. but closing your windows and locking your doors won't keep the lady from coming into your car.. if it had wanted to do that.. just be glad it didn't decide to follow you back to civilization.. =P

i don't know how many of you heard of this.. but there's always been this story about the knight bridge being full of these things hanging around and get into your car while you drive across at night.. =\ and knight and 49th is known to be a traffic blackspot rumoured to be caused by lingering ghosts..
Does that mean they watch you when you masturbate?
Hope not.

You are a fan of Kenny vs Spenny, right? Your post reminded me of the Who Can Stay In A Haunted House Longer episode.

Yay!
My Side Note: It is mid-night right now. Turn off all the lights around you, close the window shades, and read this thread from the very beginning. It is quite creepy.
im not much of a believer in the supernatural but my house is def haunted. now i dont think there are such things as ghosts and dead people walkn around, i rather believe in something along the lines of string theory that allows for parallel dimensions and universes and such "sightings" could be mear interactions between parallels, now i'm no physicist so i dont know wheather this kidna shit is likely or not but i rather believe that then in "god" and "heaven/hell" and "spirits" wondering the earth lol
my most recent encounter was during the massive snow fall, i saw someone walking past this glass door, my first though was that im getting robbed again so i instantly ran outside ready to fuck someone up turns out there was no1 there, not even footsteps lol other thing that happened in my house range from hearing people tall in empty rooms, clear distinct footsteps in the upstairs bedrooms when there is no1 in there, distinct "knock knock" on doors and windows fucked up part was when it happened to me in one of the upstairs bedrooms lol
i dono all in all i find this kinda shit funny, when it happens i joke around about it cuz 90% of the time im with someone else and the other person usually tends to shit bricks lol
I haven't seen anybody able to laugh at these kinds of situations, except when everybody is shitting around I guess. Usually people are either serious or scared, or panicky when it comes to being in these situations.
Also, just out of curiousity, when you see a ghost for yourself and swear you were sane when you saw one, what other reason is there not to believe in a heaven or hell? wouldn't seeing one be sufficient in saying there might be things science may just not be able to explain?
^ oh so just cuz as humans were too stupid to figure something out it means it dosnt exist? science has a pretty good track record of proving shit religion preaches as false, ya its a slow process and sometimes it disproves one thing but raises a ton more questions but overall i have more faith in science then in somehting written a long ass time ago by probably someone who got high off some real good shit
Dude I tried reading your post times over and I don't get what you stand for and how you got into that thought process.
I was only asking, at least for those who believe in or seen ghosts for themselves, if they believe in some god or heaven or hell or any other supreme being even if currently science cannot explain them.
Because to me, it seems contradicting to believe in the existence of ghosts while refusing to believe in the concept of a god or a devil
not to creep you out more.. but closing your windows and locking your doors won't keep the lady from coming into your car.. if it had wanted to do that.. just be glad it didn't decide to follow you back to civilization.. =P

Anybody know any haunted spots around Vancouver? Damn, I love this stuff.
Can you elaborate a little bit? How would you know they get into your car? Do you see them in your rear-view mirror and such?
I never had any "real" ghost encounters before. I went to dinner with a couple of buddies and the restaurant was right across from this abandoned house. We noticed there was someone standing behind the door and looking at us through the window. She didn't budge or move or anything and we started freaking out really bad. After dinner, one of us manned up and got a little closer to the house only to find out it was a poster of some girl plastered on there. Yeah that was pretty lame.

yes on aliens
and by aliens I mean extraterrestrial intelligent life. Given the number of planets in the galaxy, the likelihood of this is just too good imo
odds of an alien encounter/invasion is a totally different story..
I would like to say I don't believe in ghosts, but I think I saw a few when I was living in my old house. But then again I was young, it could've just been my imagination.

thats just saying u believe in one bullshit, so u believe all bullshit
everyone has reasons for their beliefs, be it rational/logical or not is another question altogether
"The Others" (Movie with Nicole Kidman) freaked me out fwiw. Someone's comments reminded me of this, but no spoilers
