Flight Travel Tips

edited February 2009 in General
Does anyone have any tips or advice? Me and my boyfriend are going to be taking a eurotrip this year.

My understanding is that when you buy at places like flight centre they have discounted tickets because they buy in bulk from carriers...but the downside is that you have to buy closer to the date which makes planning harder...?

Or I can buy from the airlines, which is usually more expensive, but generally more flexible.

I've been looking up prices and noticed flights to a lot of places in europe have dropped 25 - 50%, is this because of fuel prices / recession??

I'm just not sure if I'm missing something, I've never planned a trip where I was paying so ignored these kind of things.

I usually buy my tickets online. WestJet and Air Canada usually have seat sales often so it's a good idea to try and get them while you can. I booked a roundtrip flight to Toronto in March for $380 with tax with WestJet during one of their seat sales. Pretty good deal to me.

Do you use sites like travelocity, or do you actually go directly to the sites for the individual airlines?

I'm guessing if you use something like travelocity it doesn't list the sale prices?

I went to individual airlines when I did Europe.

I used Air Transit (crappy planes but cheapest flight). It's too bad Zoom is out of commission because they were cheap too.

    Have fun, I LOVE Europe!

Definitely shop around and just go with wherever you get the most bang for the buck. If you're looking for flight only it's usually better to go directly through the airline but if your looking for a package use either a travel agent or an online site such as Expedia or Travelocity. The TravelCuts website usually has good deals for students too and RedFlagDeals is handy for hotels.

my advice is not to book from here, at least not hotels
once ur in europe u can find tickets to anywhere form anywhere for pretty cheap

as a side note i love how on average people say "i love europe" when theyve only see the western half ;)
edit: and if u plan to rent a car in europe, stay the fuck out of the left lane, k thanx :)

What airline are you looking at? Jesus. I went in 2007 and it was $1200 round-trip to/from Spain.

book the flight there and back from here(Canada), u don't wanna take chances on that... but for trips within Europe book from within Europe;)

also keep in mind that prices are scaled within Europe depending on the country, it cost me 115 Euro for 10nights + 2days travel in Greece because i booked the trip from a 2nd world country, i guarantee you the same trip booked from say Italy would be over 1000 Euro, and it would only add 1day travel time ;)

if your going to take trains: avoid local trains within europe (stick to euro star trains), if you do take local trains buy 2nd class tickets and sit in 1st class, if someone gets mad pretend u don't know what planet ur on :P

if your going to take buses: make sure they have a washroom and that the bus driver allows people to use it, waiting for hours for him to get to a rest stop isn't fun

if your going to drive: the notion that the you can drive as fast as u want or that the autobahn has no speed limit is a myth, yes there are "sections" without speed limits but most of the time there are speed limits imposed or the highways are under renovation. note that other countries have max speed limits imposed at all times. tunnels are under constant video surveillance and speeding in tunnels is just about the worst thing u can do..and in some countries (Italy, Hungary etc.) u need passes to be allowed to drive on highways, sometimes they don't have toll booths so u don't wanna end up @ one without a pass cuz ull get charged maximum fee.

avoid cabs unless u know which are legit, there are "pirates" so to say which will try and charge ridiculous fees, in eastern europe their also probably armed, dont take chances ;)

in western europe watch where you eat, food can get pretty damn expensive... like i said i spent 115euro my hotel+breakfast in greece but i burned up about that much a day in Italy on food alone (thats when 50cent hamburgers @ mcdonalds came in handy LOL)

oh and lastly dont forget on a trip to europe u gotta chill with some pirates :teeth:

Interesting, my family actually wanted to sucker me into going on ANOTHER family vacation with them this summer, cruise in Western and Eastern Europe, before I told them to fuc* off. Enjoy your vacation Randomuser.

Randomuser having a boyfriend should not be a surpise. You can clearly see a guy's nose and lips on right hand side of Randomuser's Avatar.

There are a lot of these "pirates" as well as Southeast Asia, particulary Bangkok, Thailand. There are two types of Taxi Drivers in Bangkok, those that use a meter and those that "try and charge ridiculous fees" (Note: It is not really ridiculous is you consider how cheap the Thai currency is.). My asshole uncle once got into a "pirate" cab and ended up getting into a fight with the driver. How he NOT get arrested is beyond me...

The conclusion is this: Learn to ID legitimate cab and ask them about their fees before you get into the cab. Oh, make sure he speaks English or you speak his language in order to make sure he know where he is going...

^Here is the part that I don't understand. Where do normal people eat since I doubt they can afford expensive food on a daily basis? According to my aunts who visited Europe last summer, they found the food in Europe to be so expensive that they ended up eating sandwiches and instant noodle for much of their stay in London.

    try ryanair.com
    totally legit.

i flew from london and then flew from there on.
it used to be 1 pense a flight but i guess prices went up.

the surcharge is more than the flihgt but the flight is on like 10 pounds.
downside... the airports are like on the outskirt of town. like.. flying to abbosford instead of vancouver.

And the airplanes are so funny...bright yellow and blue if I remember! I used it to fly within Europe and I thought I was going to crash!

For some reason our travel agency (one at mbc, can't remember the name) charges significantly higher than outside travel agency.

I remember having them look up an available seat on a particular airline and at a specific time. They gave me the price and the flight number but decided not to pay for it yet. So I went to some other agency and I was given the same flight number at about 150 bucks cheaper.

    Commission much?

TravelCuts you're talking about! Yeah i went in there last week to check prices for Paris and New York. The quote they gave me for Paris was $250 more and for New York $400 more than Flight Centre! Ridiculous.

@randomuser: when i went to europe i had my return flights booked here, but any traveling within europe i used the train, i.e. eurail, eurostar. although it takes longer to get to your destination I took overnight trains so I slept in the compartments and saved myself a night of accommodation. I had a eurail pass, which is pretty good if you do plan on traveling via rail, because you'll definitely save money.

I have a couple of friends in London who takes flights within europe a lot. They mentioned Ryanair is pretty decent, but said that EasyJet is bullshit. EasyJet has a lot of delays apparently and one time it took one of them 8 hours just to get to Paris from London. so... from waht i've heard it sounds like you'd be best off staying clear from EasyJet.

How long are you planning on staying in Europe for? A couple of months?

Off-topic: it's been such a long time since I've posted in this forum. I completely forgot about it having been very busy these past couple of months. it's good to be back!

i want to go for three weeks about, I think the train idea sounds good, what was the price like for that? Are there different eschalons of trains, or just one big train sesrvice?

I'm going balls to the walls, fancy hotels, no hostels, but at the same time I guess constant flights would be way too expensive.

I would suggest looking into apartment/hostels. I preferred having a kitchen and a few rooms as opposed to a really nice hotel...it's refreshing to make your own meals, and you save a TON! (Especially since even water is $8.00 bottle in Paris!)

Haha, yes! On one of those flights we had checked in, went through security, and made our way to the boarding gate...but no one had lined up yet. So we made our way to the front and parked ourselves on the ground. Next thing you know, EVERYONE starts running to the line so they can secure a decent seat. That airline is so funny.
