Nintendo crushes the competition in 2008

edited February 2009 in General
I don't think anyone would have predicted this outcome at the beginning of 2008 (including me) but it's pretty obvious that Nintendo used an optimal strategy for their console...Sony and Microsoft just couldn't capitalize on the "casual gamer" market in the same way that Nintendo was able to. Did you pick up any gaming system in 08? If so, which one?

Total U.S. hardware sales for 2008
1. Wii - 10,224,400
2. Nintendo DS - 9,951,500
3. Xbox 360 - 4,735,200
4. PlayStation Portable - 3,829,300
5. PlayStation 3 - 3,685,000
6. PlayStation 2 - 2,106,100*

Lifetime U.S. hardware sales, as of December 2008:
1. PlayStation 2 - 43.22 million
2. Nintendo DS - 27.60 million
3. Wii - 17.60 million
4. PlayStation Portable 14.30 million
5. Xbox 360 - 13.89 million
6. PlayStation 3 - 6.94 million

Bought a PS3 in October, and it's really good. Not a fan of the Wii. When I had one at my place for 6+ months, played it less than 5 times. The games hold interest for about 20 mins and get boring. It's definitely not for anybody except the casual gamer, which of course is a huge market.

Received a DS as a graduation present. Played like mad once I got it, but since uni started I only sometimes play on the bus rides home.

Sweet, I have a PS3 too! What games do you have? I mostly play COD4 and NHL09 but I'm looking forward to getting COD5 soon...it was getting a lot of bad press before it came out but now it seems like everyone has it lol

I'm really thinking about getting a Wii too solely for Mario Kart which I think is one of the funnest games ever made...online mode for that probably kills.

I got a PS3, not that much into games anymore but theres a few I play between semesters, and the fact that it doubles as a blu-ray made me get it.

I have Resistance 1 + 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, GTAIV, Bioshock, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Call of Duty: World at War, and LittleBigPlanet.

Been playing Nazi Zombies on CoD:WoW the most lately. But MGS4 is probably the best game I've ever played. If you've followed the series since MGS1, it's fuckin amazing.

As for Wii, I was really hoping Mario Kart Wii would be really good, and it would be reason enough to buy a system, but to be honest, when I finally played it, the controls seemed too loose. Multiplayer on split screen was also kind of laggy. I still prefer Mario Kart DS. Both my DS and PSP haven't gotten any playtime in a long while though. My DS comes out occasionally, but only for playing NES roms, since it has the best NES emulator I've ever played.

I haven't bothered playing GTA since GTA3 came out...it's just not the same. And I get bashed all the time for saying this but the originals with the top view were so much more fun, especially because the idea of stealing cars and running from cops was a completely new concept back then.

The new GTA games have their place. Eventually you have to catch up with the times. I found running around and doing shit in the original GTA games was fun, but eventually, you'd run out of stuff to do. Same with the new ones, but at least you have more options before you get bored.

    The missions get tedious though.

It looks like it's going to be a good few months for video gaming. Killzone 2 is coming out for PS3 this month, and it looks amazing. F.E.A.R. 2 is out in a few days, apparently. Loved the first game, and I got the demo for the second one, and it's pretty scary. RE5 next month. I downloaded the demo, but I haven't played it yet. Looks great though. I think my next few months will be occupied with video games, and going to school occasionally.
