How is PHIL 150?

edited January 2009 in General
Hey guys,
I am an engineering major and thinking of taking PHIL 150 next semester as my humanities elective. I am hoping it is a fun and an easy course.
If you have taken or know anything about it please tell me about it.
thanks!

    Hi ruler,

Welcome to Simon Fraser University. Taking Philosophy in Simon Fraser University is one of the worst choice you can make in your Post-Secondary career. Not only will you hate the course with a passion, but your GPA will suffer horribly as a result. Philosophy in Simon Fraser University is design to fuc* your GPA in the ass and you will learn nothing new from it.

There are many other alternatives you can take to fulfill your Humanities elective (or as we call it B-Humanities). Our Humanities Department offers courses such as HUM 102: Classical Mythology and HUM 105: Western Civilization that are both interesting and easy, plus the knowledge is not BS. As well as Humanities, we also have other departments such as History and English that offer fabulous courses to fulfill your B-Humanities.

    Thankyou,

    Student0667

Steering New Guys away from Philosophy is our mission

As an engineering student I don't think you'd have a problem with a philosophy class, that said as mentioned above if you're looking for b-hum credits there are easier ones outside of the philosophy department.

i'm taking phil150 this semester too, it's probably not one of the best courses in the department, but it should still be pretty good. don't expect phil courses to be "easy", but they're nothing like the nightmare Student painted for you. all your need to excel in phil is time to read the material and basic reasoning abilities.

hmm.. thanks guys for the input. but i think i am going to go ahead and take 150 this semester. as an engineer, i don't have much choice in electives and other ones student0667 mentioned are not offered.

There is a big list of courses on the SFU website that are designated with the b-hum credit. Look at them.

Unfortunately, the list you guys get is much larger than what we get. We only have a subset of those courses.. http://www.ensc.sfu.ca/courses/electives/pre_approved_electives/pre_approved_comp_studies_post_06

Even in that limited list, there are quite a number of great couses. As a History and Humanities Double Major, I have taken all the courses listed below and I think you may find it easy and enjoyable.

    In History, I would recommend...

HIST 106: French Revolution to 20th Century
-This is essentially Social Studies 9 to Social Studies 11
-Try taking this with Prof. Garfinkel, great guy, excellent power point, and not too hard

HIST 151: The Modern Middle East
-Take this course if you want to understand the origin of all the problems in the Middle East today.
-The Prof is Professor Sedra. Great professor, nice to students, and not too hard.

    In Humanities, I would recommend...

HUM 105: Western Civilization (Note: This course was once HIST 105, tell your academic advisors to update their website)
-Essentially Humanties 8 and a little Social Studies 9.
-Just four exams, so you Enginners don't have to worry about papers
-The Prof is Professor Dutton. Medieval stuff is his expertise, meaning he knows his shi*.

    HUM 102: Classical Mythology
-I don't know what to say about this, but this is a W course and you probably want to take this if you need to fulfill your lower level W
