Healthy eating at uni

edited December 2008 in General
My diet has gotten quite poor since being at uni. I survive on a $30 a week (if that) budget. Always got to get the value stuff. I get by on cereal, toast with margarine, oven baked chicken fillets and chips, and random snacks like chocolate, fruit (only since last week), breakfast bars, crisps etc everyday. And I usually drink quite a bit of alcohol once or twice a week. I have a gym membership but I am yet to go. I'm skinny but I'm starting to get a little chub.

So. On a budget, and for someone who has few pots and pans and can't even make the simplest of meals (pasta even), how do I start eating better? Any meal tips or good foods to get? I need your helps!!

Well unless you're going to stick to a fruit and veggie diet, in combination with the appropriate meats and everything for protein etc, then you're in trouble.

Honestly, fruits are high in fibre (most) and will satiate you better than something like a bag of chips, or a piece of white bread. You'll notice you'll get healthier and feel less hungry in the day (although you still need stuff high in protein like meat etc) If you load up on fruits (which are generally cheap), and with vegetables c'mon you only need to steam or boil them...hell even microwave them if you have those microwave bags. Your health will increase a lot, stay away from those simple carbohydrates like white bread etc.

There's lots of microwavable or instant food that you can buy.

Before i start to plan out your meal, I want to ask what's available on your end. First, is that $30 all for food or do you have to use a part of that $30 to pay rents and whatnot. If not, then my job will be very, very easy.

Good work on buying value items, you can safe quite a bit just by doing this. Also good work on getting cereals and toasts. You are starting off well.
oven baked chicken fillets and chips, and random snacks like chocolate, fruit (only since last week), breakfast bars, crisps etc everyday.
Instead of baked chicken filets, I would recommend buying raw chicken and prepping them youself. Also, cut down on snacks, you can use those money to buy more "real" food.
And I usually drink quite a bit of alcohol once or twice a week. I have a gym membership but I am yet to go. I'm skinny but I'm starting to get a little chub.
Eliminate drinking altogether. Drinking takes out quite a chunk of your $30. Maybe get rid of that gym membership altogether, it is not like you are using it anyway.

I'll recommend you to buy bulk and make good use of discounts and weekly specials. Also, you should learn to make some simple meals. Cook books are un-necessary, just follow your gut instinct.

i don't know how he can eat AND drink on $30

$30 can buy you a lot of produce.

One week worth of bananas $2.
    10 lbs of potato, $4-5.
Day old bakeries, $1-$2, freeze it.
One week worth of greens, $2-3.
    24 Eggs. $6.
5lb bag of rice is $5. 5lb pasta is $8.

If you really need food, there's always the food bank.

On $30 budget for food, you are too poor to afford meat, besides, 24 eggs for a week gives you enough proteins anyway.

Why don't you go grocery shopping with that money? It'll last you longer and you can control the amount of fat and calories you take in. But really, you should learn how to cook.

    OR.

You can hire me as a cook. ;)

Haha, I was joking! But I honestly love cooking for people if they don't mind veggies, stirfry, eggs, pasta, or soup.
